Wake–up

Cruz felt his head throbbing painfully as everyone whispered around him. It had been more than an hour since he woke up on the floor of the room he shared with Presley. Anderson was still hovering over him as he continued to lay on his side on the bed.

According to Algernon, who was also in the room, he’d been tased and then when he was on the ground

someone injected him with a sedative. He was then transported back to his room and dumped there with

Presley nowhere in sight. His heart clenched painfully.

“Cruz, you need to sit up and help us.”

“He took her,” Cruz whispered sadly.

“He did but we can get her back. Algernon knows people.”

“My Russian friend is on his way,” Algernon spoke seriously. “I believe Liborio Bartoli underestimates who I am and what I do. I tend to lay very low and operate more in shadows. I have a very public image here in Europe which makes a good cover for my more,” he made a face, “illustrious activities.”

Cruz noted Algernon was speaking to him in French as if he didn’t want the rest of the room to understand. Anderson speaks French too.”

“I know. Sloane does as well. However, your girlfriend’s family does not, and I don’t want to risk them being involved in more than they need. Mina was permitted to share with you and Presley because we wanted Liborio in the hopes since he was listening he would do a bit more research and he would back off if he knew I was backing you. It served to make him panic instead and he made a move sooner rather than later.”

“He panicked?” Cruz got up on his elbows.

“Sir?” Mina interrupted, “They think they found the connection.”

Algernon looked at Cruz, “my Russian friends are particularly good in cyber work. I asked them this morning to do some digging after we left Presley and Liborio at the café. Mina, what do they think?”

“Presley is a member of a kink club which is owned by Liborio Bartoli.”

Cruz groaned loudly, “you have got to be kidding me.”

“What is it?” Sloane asked as she came back into the room with a cold cloth in her hand to put on Cruz’s

neck.

“The b**m club Ladybird belongs to is owned by Bartoli.”

Sloane and Halima both made faces as they exchanged confused glances, “what are you talking about?” “The b**m club. She showed me her membership card.”

“I’ve known Presley since I was a baby. She is not a member of a b**m club.”

“Yes she is,” Mina interrupted. “Her membership card is here. It would seem she’s been a member for six years. It is Vancouver, Canada. She has gone to this club multiple times. Six years ago, she went a total of twelve times in a six–week period. Since then, she’s attended only a handful of times, but she is a member.” “There has to be a mistake,” Halima was confused.

Wake up

“Her first book, Sloane said suddenly. “Her first book was about an allen who was into bondage. All of he books have a thread of kink to them. We always thought she simply has a vivid imagination but maybe she goes for research? There is no way she’s participating. She’s got the lowest pain threshold of anyone I know. Algernon looked at Sloane curiously, his hand running over his rounded belly. He was back in his cargo

His stomach churned with disgust at the balding rotund man and the svelte sweet girl together but to each their own, he supposed.

“You have been in such places?” Algernon eyed Sloane curiously.

“What is this emo?” Mina asked curiously.

“Goth. Punk?” Halima threw in with a sigh. “Sloane was the typical computer hacker who sat in the dark all the time with only the glow of her screen to light her day. She dyed her hair pitch black, wore more black eyeliner than an entire runway of fashion models, and everything from her eyebrow to her septum was

pierced.”

“Even my tongue,” Sloane grinned at Algernon. “You know my tongue is still pierced.”

“Yes I do,” his eyes narrowed on her and a twisted grin pulled his features.

“I might be sick,” Anderson complained from where he stood over the bed. He ripped the cloth from Sloane’s hands and draped it on Cruz’s neck. “Buddy, you need to sober up so we can figure out what happened to you.

”

Algernon was still focused on Sloane. “You have been to these places where Presley is a member?”

She walked to Mina’s spot and looked at the membership card image on the screen. “Not this one. It’s a middle–of–the–road club and my guess is if it’s owned by the mafia then you need to know someone to get into it. I’m kind of glad she went to this one and not the one further up the road. That would have been hella embarrassing.”

“You’re so weird, Sloane,” Halima made a face at her.

“I would not have wanted her to see me latex is all I’m saying. We’re best friends for life but I never want to be in the same room as her when I’m getting off.”

“Nobody wants to be in the room with you when that’s happening,” Anderson snapped at her.

“That is not true,” Algernon reached out and yanked Sloane to his side, his fist grabbing a bunch of her hair and he stared into her eyes. “We will be having a very real conversation about all of your experiences later, m on amour.” His hand reached up to trace where a tiny hole dotted her eyebrow. “You were pierced here?” He boldly licked it. “I like it.”

Cruz and Anderson exchanged horrified and disgusted glances. Algernon licked Sloane’s face, and th woman was putty in his hands for it. Even Halima seemed put off by the action, grabbed a bottle of water, and started guzzling it.

“Can we focus on my missing fiancée?” Cruz asked trying to change the subject.

Wake–up

“Ah yes,” Algernon nodded and pulled his phone from his pocket and sent a text. “I will ask my Russian friend to visit us and tell us what he knows in person. Which of you is going to go tell Presley’s parents their daughter has been kidnapped by a man who owns a b**m parlor their daughter is a member of?”

“It’s for research,” Halima grumbled, “it has to be. There is no way she is participating. Sloane is right.”

“She told me she likes to watch.” Cruz muttered. “When I cornered the morning of the brunch, she told me she belonged to a b**m club, and I called her bluff and asked her what she does there, and she said watching is

her kink.”

“I don’t buy it.” Sloane said. “She was angry with you then Cruz and she was trying to stay under your skin. She didn’t want to do the four dates you wanted to set up for her but since she was the one who told the officers you guys were into rough role play, she went with it. “Okay!” Cruz pushed off the bed. “Definitely sober now. Has anyone seen Odin?”

“No. His room was empty. There was a quite a bit of blood in it.”

“Presley said Liborio told her he beat Odin up for f*****g up. We need to find her.” Cruz stood on wobbling legs and walked to the patio door. It was dark outside now. How long was he asleep for?

A knock on the door and Mina was rushing to let in two other men. Cruz felt the temperature in the room drop by several degrees at the coldness emanating from the pair. There was not an ounce of warmth in their eyes, and he was a hundred percent certain these men killed for nothing more than fun and games. They were far scarier than Bartoli and he didn’t even know their names.

“Algernon,” one of the men moved and shook the round man’s hand. “It is good to see you but not under these circumstances I’m sure. This is your new woman. She is pretty and young. You could have more sons with her. Your boys always did want siblings.”

Sloane made a whimpering sound when Algernon groped her in front of them. He smirked, “whether she has my sons or not is irrelevant. She is mine now. She is not going anywhere I am not. Now, her best friend and sister was taken and by someone I believe you do business with Belkin.”

“Yes. Bartoli. We have let him use our fishing vessels from time to time to move product. We know he was supposed to have a shipment running from the port in Paris to Sicily and the boat made a detour offshore near a marina here in Nice. It is probable he took your friend to this trawler. However, I cannot reach my captain, and I am concerned perhaps the boat was compromised. The captain tends to travel with his wife and daughter. If Bartoli did something stupid like force my captain to turn a blind eye to a kidnapping I will be quite upset with him.”

“You do far more business with the Italians than I,” Algernon made a face. “They are too shifty and conniving. I prefer the blunt honesty of our transactions and those with my Middle Eastern friends than with the sneaky Italians.”

“I have many business dealings with the Bartoll family, but the man knows our feelings on trafficking women. We won’t abide by it.” Belkin motioned to the silent man next to him. “He is quite upset with Liborio for using

him in this game.”

“Using him how?” Cruz felt like he was watching a ping pong match as the men talked back and forth rapidly.

“I am exceptionally good with sniper rifle. Liborio told me a man was forcing his woman to be where she didn’t want to be. He insinuated she was being trafficked and used my disgust for the business to his advantage. I was the one who put the red dot on your chest.” The man’s thick accent was filled with remorse. “I am sorry. I was friends with Liborio for many years. I did not anticipate he would lie to me, especially over a girl. He and I have worked on multiple ventures where we rescued women from such situations.”

“Wait,” Cruz held his hand up, “Bartoli rescues women?”

“Yes. We have run many joint operations. His younger sister was meant to be sold in a transaction arranged by his father. When his father killed the girl in a fit of anger because she kissed another boy, it set him on a different path. He runs multiple clubs as a way to find women in situations they don’t to be in. He told me this girl, your girl,” the man looked sickened as he spoke, “was abused her entire life by her family. He said he found her years ago and I expect it was when she joined his club. He told me he’s been watching her for years in case he needed to rescue her, and it finally happened he needed to. I did not know she was here of her own free will.”
