Chapter 18
Her face was inches from mine, eyes wild
with hate, hands tightening around my throat.
“You ruined everything for me!” she hissed.
“Everything!”
I clawed at her arms, struggling, trying to
scream, but the pressure on my neck grew
tighter.

“You took him from me! You made him leave!
And now you’re marrying someone else?!”
she shrieked.
I kicked beneath the covers, my fingers
scraping at her wrists. “Get–off–me!”

“I was supposed to win!” she cried. “I made
everyone believe you were nothing–because
you were! And now they all pity you like some
saint? No. Not again. Never again!”
With one final burst of strength, I slammed
my knee upward, hitting her in the stomach.

She gasped, loosening her grip.
I rolled away, coughing and gasping for air,
but she was fast—she grabbed a syringe
from the tray nearby, swinging it at me like a
blade.
“DONNA!” I screamed, adrenaline flooding
my body.
“SHUT UP!” she shrieked. “You don’t get to
win, Trina! You don’t get to live!”
I caught her arm mid–swing, struggling with

her across the bed. I didn’t know where I
found the strength, but I refused to let her
win. I shoved her back, sending the syringe
skidding across the floor.
She stumbled but didn’t stop–lunging for a
scalpel this time from the nearby tray.
We crashed to the floor, her on top of me,
snarling, swinging the scalpel wildly. I felt a
burning sting across my arm but ignored it—
grabbing at her hair, pushing her back.
“You ruined yourself, Donna!” I shouted. “I

gave you nothing but kindness–and you fed
lies to my daughter!”
“She’s my daughter now!” she screeched.
“She was NEVER yours!” I cried. “You just
made her hate me so she’d love you!”
She slapped me hard.
I fought back.
We rolled across the cold tiles, hands
tangled, nails digging into flesh, hair ripped

and tears falling, but I was too exhausted, too
weak. My vision blurred.
Then the door burst open.
“TRINA!”
Mateo.
But it was too late.
I didn’t even see the knife until I felt the hot,
tearing pain in my side.

My breath caught.
Everything slowed.
I looked down.
Blood.
Warm. Spreading. Fast.
“NO!” Mateo’s voice cracked as he rushed
forward.
Donna scrambled to her feet, wild–eyed, but

Mateo tackled her before she could run. I
heard the sound of bodies hitting the wall,
screams, glass shattering.
But I could only look at the ceiling.
So white.

So bright.
My hand pressed against my side, sticky, wet. My fingers trembled.
“Trina!” Mateo was at my side again, voice

shaking, hands pressing over mine to stop
the bleeding. “Stay with me. Please–stay
with me!”
I tried to speak, but blood bubbled at my lips.
And all I could think was…
Not again.
Not now.
Please, not now.

Darkness crept in from the edges of my
vision.
I blinked at him, tears falling, barely
whispering the words.
“I… love you.”
And then everything went dark.

Mateo paced the cold linoleum floor outside

the emergency room, his fists clenched at his
sides and his jaw so tight it felt as if it might
shatter. Every few seconds, his eyes would
snap to the door, willing it to open, hoping to
hear good news about Trina. But it remained
closed. Silent. Mocking.
The blood on his shirt had dried, dark and
stiff over his chest. Trina’s blood.
His heart pounded with the memory–her
collapsing in his arms, her breath hitching,
her whisper of I love you as she faded into
unconsciousness. He clenched his eyes shut,

had to live. He wouldn’t let her leave him. Not
now. Not ever.
Footsteps approached quietly behind him. It
was Lucien–his long–time butler and trusted
right–hand man–walking with a grim
expression.
“She’s in custody now,” Lucien said carefully,
“Donna has been arrested. Attempted
murder, trespassing, illegal possession of a
weapon–the police have everything they
need.”

Mateo didn’t respond at first. He stared
blankly ahead, then slowly turned to Lucien.
His voice was low and controlled, but it
simmered with unrestrained fury.
“That’s not enough.”
Lucien hesitated. “Sir?”
“I want her gone.” Mateo’s voice dropped
colder, deadlier. “Not just behind bars.
Erased.”
“Understood.”

“Send word to the men,” Mateo said, eyes
locked on the emergency room door like a
beast guarding his wounded mate. “Find her.
Make her suffer. Make her disappear. I don’t
care how. Just make sure she never breathes
the same air as Trina again.”
Lucien gave a short nod. “Yes, sir.”

“And make it quiet,” Mateo added after a
beat. “No press. No trace. If she so much as
looks in Trina’s direction again–make sure it’s
the last thing she ever sees.”

“I’ll take care of it,” Lucien replied, bowing
slightly before walking away, already pulling
out his phone.
Mateo exhaled, running a hand down his
face. His knuckles still ached from earlier-
from punching Jackson, from holding Trina
too tightly, from clinging to rage because it
was the only thing keeping him from falling
apart.
Minutes passed. Or hours. Time meant
nothing anymore.

The door to the ER remained closed.
He sat down slowly, elbows on his knees,
head hanging low as he stared at the floor.
His whole life had shifted the moment Trina
walked back into it. She had rebuilt herself,
and he had sworn to protect that version of
her–stronger, wiser, unstoppable.
He wouldn’t fail her again.

The sound of hurried footsteps echoed down
the hallway.
Mateo looked up sharply.
Jackson.
The man looked breathless, face pale, hair a
mess, eyes wide with panic.
Mateo stood in one fluid movement, his body
stiff with fury. Before Jackson could even
speak, Mateo swung.

His fist collided with Jackson’s jaw, sending
him stumbling back against the wall.
“What the hell-?!” Jackson barked, holding
his face.

“You bastard,” Mateo growled. “Your mistress
tried to kill her.”
