Chapter 6
Two days later, I woke up in the hospital.
Preston was sitting by my bed with bruises on his face.
When he saw me wake up, his dim eyes suddenly lit up.
“Aria, I misunderstood you… I thought you didn’t want to save Iris.”
I didn’t want to respond. In his mind, I was the villain anyway.
Seeing my silence, he leaned in anxiously:
“Aria, say something to me, please?”
I just closed my eyes irritably: “Get lost.”
Preston’s face darkened instantly, but he stubbornly remained seated.
Just then the door opened and Cade walked in with a huge bouquet.
Seeing Preston, his eyes narrowed dangerously.
“Well, well, if it isn’t the twice–married loser!” he sneered. “I just stepped out to buy flowers and you snuck back in?”
Hearing this, Preston shot to his feet, fists clenched: “Watch your mouth. I don’t like that term.”
‘Also, I’m visiting my wife. That’s none of your damn business.”
Cade placed the flowers by my pillow and smiled contemptuously:
‘Preston, you ARE a twice–married loser! Wife? I saw crystal clear who was wearing the wedding dress at that altar–and it sure wasn’t my fiancée Aria.”
‘Fiancée?!” Preston’s voice rose as he whirled toward me. “Aria, who the hell is this random guy? You better explain
yourself!”
Explain?
I couldn’t help but sneer inwardly.
For Iris’s sake, he’d been cruel to me, even physically violent.
I’d even asked to break ‘our engagement so many times, and he never took it seriously.

I was completely done with this man.
And now, he wanted explanations? As if he deserved any!
So, I ignored him completely and looked weakly at Cade: “Cade, my head hurts.”
Cade immediately sat by the bed and naturally took my hand: “The doctor said you’ve had two concussions in a few days. You need rest.”
His thumb gently rubbed the inside of my wrist–a comforting little gesture.
Preston’s eyes turned icy instantly: “Let go of her!”
“Why should I?” Cade didn’t even look up. “Because you ditched her on the wedding car? Or because you nearly killed her over your ex–wife?”
Preston faltered: “Those were all misunderstandings!”
A doctor walked in: “Mr. Blackwell, your wife is awake. There are some care instructions I need to go over.”
“Aría, we’ll settle this when I get back!” Preston threw out that threat and hurried off.
The moment the door closed, Cade pulled me into a tight hug, his voice breaking:
“Aria, if I’d known Preston was such scum, how could I have watched him destroy you for five years?”
“The girl I’ve been crazy about all these years, what right does some twice–married asshole have to treat you like garbage…”
I patted his back helplessly.
I was the injured one, yet here I was comforting him.
“Cade, I’m not even crying. What are you crying about?”
“Can’t I feel bad for you?” He buried his face in my shoulder, wiping away tears. “I taught you from childhood to be fierce with men, but you used it all on me instead.”
I pulled out a tissue: “Could you maybe cry into this instead of on me?”
Hearing this, his eyes suddenly gleamed mischievously as he leaned closer: “You wipe them for me.”
I reached up to pinch his cheek, and he grabbed my hair in retaliation.
Sure enough, every time we meet we either argue or get into fights.
Just as I was wondering if we’d fight every day after marriage, he suddenly cupped the back of my head and kissed
- me.

My face instantly burned.
His ears were bright red, but he tried to play it cool:
“No more fighting… as long as you kiss me, I’ll let you win everything.”
