Chapter 7
“Mr. Blackwell, your wife’s external injuries are fine, but the fetus is already five months along and
underdeveloped. She needs hospitalization.”
As soon as the doctor finished speaking, Preston suddenly froze, his ears ringing loudly.
Five months?
He’d only gone to find her in London three months ago,
How could be?!
Unless… This child wasn’t his!
Unable to process what the doctor said next, Preston spun around and charged toward Iris’s room.
“Iris!” he bellowed furiously. “Why did you lie to me!”
The woman in the bed looked up in panic, her pale face still streaked with tears.
“Preston, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
The same pitiful expression as before, but now it just made him sick.
Three months ago, she’d used this exact act to seduce him into bed.
Preston took a shuddering breath, chest heaving violently:
“You said when you were with that guy, you were just keeping him company through his terminal illness, that nothing physical happened!”
Iris’s lashes fluttered as tears streamed down:
“Preston, he forced me. I didn’t want to.”
“He was so sick he couldn’t even get out of bed–how could he force you?!” Preston laughed bitterly: “Iris, is there a single truthful word in your mouth?!”
His trembling finger pointed at her belly, voice cracking:
“You know what? Even without this baby, I would’ve taken care of you forever! I told you–you’re my ex–wife, my responsibility!”
“But why did you have to lie?! Making me play daddy to another man’s kid, making me… lose Aria!”

Chapter 7
Hearing this, Iris looked completely bewildered: “Lose Aria? You don’t even like her–what’s the big deal if you lose
her?”
“Who said I don’t like her?!” Preston practically roared.
But the next second, he froze. A strange feeling washed over him, and he seemed to panic a little.
Then his tone softened: “People’s feelings can change.”
Or maybe they’d never changed at all–at first, calling Aria the love of his life was just to placate her. After all, those casual words could make her happy for an entire day.
But later, it seemed like each time he said it, he meant it more than the last.
Watching Preston’s expression gradually soften, Iris’s eyes filled with sorrow:

“Preston, three years ago we’d only known each other a month when you begged me to marry you, saying you’d
chosen me. Was that all in my head?”
“You always talk about responsibility, but forget responsibility for a second–just tell me, did you ever love me?”
He only needed to give a simple “yes” like before, but this time Preston found it incredibly hard to answer.
He searched desperately through his memories for the answer…
Three years ago, Iris had been a struggling student who’d earned a full scholarship through her own merit.
She was optimistic and cheerful, had her own ambitions, never bound by anyone or any rules.
Unlike Aria, who even when forced into an arranged marriage with someone she didn’t like, never uttered a single
complaint.
She had no temper, no edges, so obedient it was infuriating.
He didn’t want to be like her–passive and compliant, just a tool for Grandfather’s repayment.
So his first act of rebellion was marrying Iris in a foreign country after knowing her less than a month.
“PRESTON!”
Iris suddenly raised her voice, choking back tears. “Is even answering this question so hard?”
Her fingertips dug deep into her palms.
Such a simple question about love, and he’d been silent for five whole minutes.
She already knew the answer.

“Maybe, I loved you… once,” Preston finally spoke, his voice terrifyingly calm.
Preston suddenly realized something–maybe he truly had loved Iris. But from marrying her to divorcing her, none of it had anything to do with love–one was impulse, the other was compromise,
The love in his heart had disappeared at some point, gradually replaced by guilt.
He felt he’d wronged Iris, that he shouldn’t have rushed her into a marriage only to force her out of it.
So out of guilt, he started taking her side, caring for her, even wanting to give her a child… But it was also because of his “guilt” that he’d broken Aria’s heart completely.
“Preston, please don’t say things you don’t mean out of anger.”
Iris’s words pulled Preston back to reality, but this time he’d finally made up his mind. He turned around and said calmly:
“Iris, go back to London. Don’t contact me anymore.”
Heart–wrenching sobs came from behind him, but his steps never hesitated as he headed straight for Aria’s room.
