Chapter 1
Buzz – my husband Reed Forrester’s phone lights up: ‘European getaway – 10 days – CONFIRMED.‘
I smiled. Classic him – always with the elaborate surprises.
But I waited through the entire October holiday week, and that surprise never came. Instead, just “Sorry babe, work emergency – have to fly out for meetings.”
Then his secretary Kyla’s Instagram story popped up at the top of my feed:
“A lover’s kiss beneath Venice’s Bridge of Sighs – you kissed my lips, but captured my heart. #BridgeOfSighs #LoveWins”
The photo? My husband and his secretary in a passionate embrace.
My finger hovered over the screen for exactly two seconds.
In the next second… Screenshot. Family group chat. Send.
[Congrats everyone – looks like you’re getting a new daughter–in–law.]
Almost immediately, the Forrester family chat exploded:
My mother–in–law: [Harper, isn’t this some kind of misunderstanding?]
Reed’s cousin Jake: [Damn, my cousin really knows how to live it up.]
Aunt Vivian quickly tagged Jake: [Watch your mouth, young man.]
Reed’s sister Maddie: [Why does this woman look so familiar?]
Reed’s cousin Brooke: [That’s his assistant, right? Kyla something.]
Then silence fell over the chat. After a few minutes, Reed finally responded: [Kyla lost at Truth or Dare and had to post a kiss photo. As her boss, I couldn’t let the poor girl be embarrassed, so I helped her out. Nothing to see here,
folks.]
Next second, Reed called me: “Harper, can you please stop acting like a child? How could you post something like that in the family chat? You know the Forresters are a prominent family. Grandpa and Grandma are extremely traditional. Delete that photo right now.”
I kept my voice steady: “Is there something wrong with the photo? I thought it was quite nicely composed. The caption was especially touching.”
Reed’s tone grew impatient: “I told you it was just a dare she lost. Why are you making such a big deal about a silly game with a junior colleague?”

I sat up straight, my voice turning serious: “She was kissing MY husband, so yes, it’s a big deal. Appearances matter, Reed. If you didn’t have feelings for her, you wouldn’t have allowed this to happen in the first place, I hope you’re not making a mistake you’ll regret.”
Hearing this, his voice softened: “Okay, I’ll be more careful next time. I’ll bring you back something nice when I
return.”
I glanced at the time and asked, “When exactly are you coming back from your business trip“?”
Then he responded a time, a time that matched perfectly with the ten–day luxury tour package I’d seen,
Reed Forrester had finally betrayed our marriage.
A few days later, I went to the airport to pick up Reed. Not because I was clingy, but because there was a forrester family gathering today, and we had to appear as a couple.
Not a while, Reed emerged pushing a cart of luggage, with Kyla following close behind, looking like a delicate little
bird.
Seeing me, Kyla took a timid step back. “Mrs. Forrester,” she greeted softly.
Reed put his arm around me and kissed my cheek. “Thanks for coming, babe.” His breath carried the lingering scent. of a woman’s perfume, likely from a recent kiss,
I turned my face away, noticing a faint lipstick smudge on his shirt collar. I said nothing.
Reed spoke casually, “Honey, let’s drop Kyla off first, then head home together.”
Without waiting for my answer, he automatically opened the passenger door for her, explaining that Kyla gets
carsick.
Sitting in the front seat, Kyla glanced at me with an apprehensive look. “Mr. Forrester, I can just grab a rideshare. It’s no trouble.”
Reed took my hand, his tone authoritative. “A young woman walking back home alone at night? Too dangerous. Besides, it’s on our way.”
On our way? It was fifteen kilomiles in the opposite direction, but, whatever you say.
Then my eyes met Kyla’s in the rearview mirror–a silent battle of knowing glances and feminine intuition.
I lowered my gaze and asked quietly, “Was it just the two of you on this business trip?”
Reed answered dismissively, “No, the other colleagues took different flights.”
Before getting out, Kyla handed me a box. With a tilt of her head, she said, “Mrs. Forrester, this is a gift for you. Mr. Forrester mentioned you like scarves. I hope you like it, though I’m not sure if the color suits you.”
Reed glanced at the gray scarf and chuckled. “Harper’s a bit older, not like you young girls who prefer playful colors. It’s perfect for her.”
