“Lauren, please, just give me one more shot.”
I got cornered by Daniel in the parking lot after work.
Speechless, I said, “Daniel, we’re over. Can you just stop bothering me?”
“I can’t lose this job. Can you talk to them for me?”
He owed his tour gig to my parents pulling strings.
He never thought about me when things were smooth.
Now that rumors were spreading, he was desperate.
“What were you doing when you cheated?”
“Pants just magically grew legs and walked off when you saw Jessica?”
Before I finished, someone came running.
“I knew you’d be here! I’m pregnant and you’re still chasing her! What the hell, Daniel?”
Jessica was throwing a tantrum, totally stripped of that old confidence and grace.
I’d already heard from Kevin about her–homeless, no support, and clinging to Daniel as her last hope.
Pregnant now, she was even more desperate to hold on.
No wonder she flipped seeing me and Daniel together.
“You added me first. You started the conversation.”
“And now that things are bad, you’re blaming me? Trying to cut ties?”
Jessica kept talking, practically spilling Daniel’s secrets.
“Get away from me! Lauren Carter’s my wife!”
Daniel pushed her hard.
She fell two feet back, her belly hitting the railing.
When they rushed her to the ER, there was blood.
“Are you okay?”
Liam showed up fast after hearing the news.

Chapter 15
We barely knew each other, maybe three meetings total.
But with him here, I felt safe.
He wrapped his arm around me, wiped sweat from my forehead, handed me water.
Daniel finally realized something was wrong.
“So you already found someone new, huh Lauren? No wonder you’re so cold.”
He stepped up, glaring at Liam.
“Who the hell are you? Tell me–have you slept together?”
Liam punched him so hard Daniel didn’t know which way was up.
“Lauren’s my girlfriend now. Stay the hell away.”
That was the first time I heard Liam curse.
I used to hate when guys swore.
But when he said it? It didn’t bother me one bit.
Is this what they call boyfriend glasses?
