Chapter 17
Chapter 17
Not long after, I saw Daniel pop up again in Kevin’s social feed.
Apparently, he’d gotten married..
Not to Madeline, not to Jessica.
Some nouveau riche daughter.
I heard they fought every day–but it was Daniel getting the worse end of it.
“Listen, this girl’s loaded! Daniel had her wrapped around his finger in two days.”
“She just got out of jail, wants a quiet life, and once she got pregnant, they tied the knot.”
Later, I bumped into Kevin again.
“Lauren Carter, you lucked out not staying with that guy.”
“He got a hundred grand from his mother–in–law, blew it all, and now’s dodging debt collectors everywhere.”
Heard he even lost a few fingers to some debt collectors.
“Still up?”
Liam climbed into bed and saw my phone screen still open on my chat with Kevin.
“Why do you care so much about him? Jealous?”
I stroked Liam’s fuzzy head, feeling all warm inside.
You know what? Younger guys are just better. They know how to be sweet.
“Why care? He’s probably out there living off the grid somewhere.”
I turned off my screen.
“I was actually asking about Kevin’s girlfriend–looks like she’s due any day now.”
“We should go visit.”
“Why watch others? Let’s have our own.”
He shut off the lights and pulled the covers over us.
Peace settled in.
I looked at Liam’s sleeping face, feeling like the world was finally calm.
If Daniel hadn’t been so cold back then, maybe Liam and I wouldn’t have met.
And maybe that’s the best ending we could ask for.
