Chapter 8
Fortunately, the hotel was well–equipped. Medical staff appeared immediately to help Kyla and called an
ambulance.
After being taken to the hospital, Kyla gave birth prematurely to Reed’s first son.
The incident at the gala caused quite a stir. I heard that the Forrester family sent a housekeeper and a nanny with nutritional soup to care for Kyla, while taking the baby back to the Forrester home.
Kyla was delighted–her child had been acknowledged by the Forrester family, which meant she was acknowledged
too.
But her happiness didn’t last long. Because Reed never showed up, and after the baby was taken away, he wasn’t brought back. The Forrester family members also disappeared. She finally realized she had been abandoned.
She wanted to call the police, but they told her it was normal for a child’s father and grandparents to take the baby–this was a family dispute they could only mediate, and the parties involved needed to negotiate among
themselves.
Having just given birth, Kyla was deeply affected by this situation. She became hysterical, and doctors said she was suffering from postpartum depression and couldn’t handle any more stress.
After being discharged, she quietly returned to Reed’s house, not making any fuss. And the Forrester family didn’t mistreat her–they continued to send people to serve her, telling her that as long as she behaved and didn’t cause trouble, she could continue living this way indefinitely–if she just stayed obedient.
On the Welcome Baby Party, the Forrester family held a grand banquet at their old residence, with chefs and staff brought in from a luxury hotel.
Though I had divorced Reed, the Sterne family still had some business ties with the Forresters that couldn’t be severed immediately. For appearance’s sake, I accompanied my brother to attend the Forrester family’s celebration.
At the height of the festivities, someone asked, “Hey, where’s your precious grandson? Bring him out so we can see
him.”
As Mrs. Forrester was about to call the nanny, the woman came running out, shouting, “Ma’am, something terrible has happened–the baby is missing!”
Mrs. Forrester was utterly stunned, completely bewildered. “No one has left. How could he be missing?!”
Someone in the courtyard screamed, pointing at the rooftop: “There’s someone up there holding the baby, threatening to jump!”
It was Kyla. She had snuck into the Forrester home wearing a hotel staff uniform, found the baby, and taken him to the roof.
Chaos erupted at the party, with some people secretly filming. Through the confusion, I saw Reed reach the rooftop.

Reed’s voice trembled as he tried to coax her: “What are you doing, Kyla? Don’t be impulsive, be a good girl. What are you planning to do with the baby? Come down now.”
Yet Kyla seemed not to hear him, singing to the baby: “Don’t be afraid, baby. Mommy’s here. Mommy will always be with you.”
Reed moved slowly, still trying to calm her: “Kyla, please be reasonable. Tell me what you want–I can give you anything. Just put the baby down first.”
Hearing this, Kyla finally looked at him, her eyes wild with madness. “Liar! You deceived me. Because of you, I lost my job, my life, had a baby, and lost my freedom.”
“And you never intended to marry me. Harper was right–you would never marry me. You’d only marry someone from your own social class. I was just your plaything for idle moments.”
“Since I can’t have what I want, you won’t get what you want either. You won’t take my son away from me. He’s my life. I’ll take him with me forever, whether to heaven or hell.”
With that, she jumped with the baby in her arms.
A collective scream erupted from the crowd below.
Reed’s face drained of color as he desperately lunged forward, his fingers grasping at empty air.
Kyla and the baby plummeted to the ground, their bodies landing with a sickening finality that silenced the chaotic
scene.
Both were dead instantly.
I sighed heavily, feeling sorry for the innocent child.
Mrs. Forrester clutched her chest and fainted.
Reed rushed downstairs, seemingly slipping and tumbling down the stairs, suffering multiple fractures. He appeared not to feel the pain, dragging his injured leg with someone’s help to the ground floor. He stared blankly at Kyla and his month–old son lying on the ground, then suddenly collapsed to his knees: “Kyla…”
The Forrester family’s celebration had turned into a deadly tragedy, instantly becoming the talk of Houston.
They said Reed had an affair with his secretary, got her pregnant, then abandoned her, refusing to marry her, which led to her postpartum depression and her jumping from the roof with their child. The culprit was Reed–an irresponsible man.
As the scandal spread, Forrester Group’s stock plummeted again, dealing a fatal blow to the company. It quickly fell from being among Houston’s top ten companies to losing half its value, becoming a bottom–tier corporation.
After this series of events, Reed’s father suffered a stroke from his intense anger, forcing the company to be handed over to Reed to manage.
But the string of setbacks had already broken Reed. His once decisive leadership style vanished completely.

The next time I sawr Reed was at my engagement party with my boyfriend.
When he limped over to deliver a gift, I noticed him wearing a cheap suit, looking baggard–completely devoid of the dashing charm he once had as a young master.
He gave me a gende hog. “Be happy, Harper.”
Then he looked deeply at Julian. “Treasure her well Don’t be a fool like I was.” With that he turned and left
Julian teased. Looks like your ex–husband still can’t forget you.”
Arranging the bouquet in my hands, I smiled. ‘Of course. I’m quite a catch. If you’re not careful, this free little hird migin fly away.”
Julian gripped my hand tightly, saying softly, Tll hold on tight and never let go.”
I squeezed Julian’s hand back. From that moment on, I was willing to spend the rest of my life with him, forever finding comfort in his embrace.
