Chapter 16
The security cameras captured everything with crystal clarity.
After processing the scene and taking statements, the police prepared to escort the bodies and Heyar
back to the station.
Ronan held her tight, refusing to let go.
Heyar lay limp in his arms, her eyes vacant–clearly in complete shock.
His heart went out to her. He was about to negotiate with the officers, asking them to wait until she stabilized emotionally.
Lucius put a stop to that.
He retrieved a flash drive and handed it to the police, his tone measured and deliberate.
“Officer Martinez, this contains surveillance footage clearly showing Heyar attempting to murder
my wife. I’m filing charges and requesting a full investigation.”
At those words, Heyar snapped back to reality, screaming hysterically.
“It wasn’t me! It was an accident! The police already investigated!”
“Ronan signed a settlement agreement! You can’t come after me now!”
She argued frantically while Ronan tried to back her up.
Lucius didn’t give him the chance.
‘Officer Martinez, my wife and the person who signed that document are merely aunt and nephew by marriage. That settlement has zero legal standing. Plus, my wife is now pressing charges herself. Are we clear?”
Officer Martinez’s expression turned serious as he accepted the evidence and moved to take Heyar into custody.
Ronan tried to intervene, but Lucius stopped him cold.

“Walk out that door today and you can kiss the Moretti name goodbye. This family doesn’t harbor
criminal accomplices.”
“Also, you were there when it happened. Your signature’s on that agreement. The police will
definitely call you in for questioning. I expect you to tell them exactly what went down. Whether
you’re innocent or an accessory–that’s for the cops and courts to decide.”
Ronan’s face went pale. He didn’t dare say another word.
Seeing him freeze up completely, Heyar’s last shred of hope died.
She broke free with desperate strength, lunged at him, and slapped him hard across the face, her voice cracking with despair.
“Ronan Moretti! You’re nothing but a weak, spineless, heartless coward! I was so wrong about you! No wonder Isabella couldn’t stand you–you deserved to get dumped and manipulated by me! Ha ha
ha ha ha!”
“Want to know something? I never loved you! Every sweet thing I ever said was just to get you to buy me stuff and give me money! That’s all you were good for–your wallet and that pretty face! Other than that, you’re completely useless! If I could do it all over again, I’d rather marry the damn gardener than waste another second on you!”
The last traces of hesitation and pity in Ronan’s eyes hardened into cold indifference.
For the first time, he realized that the person he’d loved and protected for years was nothing more than a shallow gold–digger.
He shoved Heyar away, his voice thick with rage and anguish.
“Get the hell out of my sight!”
The officers dragged the still–struggling woman out of the Moretti estate.
The moment the door clicked shut, Ronan felt completely drained.
He turned around slowly and found himself staring into a familiar pair of eyes.
Isabella.
Seeing her made the darkness in his chest grow heavier. His lips parted slightly, wanting to call out
to her.

“Isabella…”
She didn’t respond.
Instead, she reached for Lucius’s hand, her voice soft and warm.
“Well, that’s over with. You should probably go to see my parents now.”
“Yeah, they’re probably getting impatient by now.”
Watching them walk away together, the light slowly faded from Ronan’s eyes.
A sharp pain tore through his chest, bringing tears to his eyes.
He felt something essential draining away from deep inside him, floating off into the distance.
Never to be found again.
