Chapter 18
Ronan also scrolled past that post.
He stared at the corner of the photo where a ring–adorned hand was visible, and the overwhelming emptiness in his heart reached its peak.
That ring was supposed to be his.
That soup was supposed to be made for him.
But now it was all gone. He had nothing left except the cold emptiness of his apartment.
Where had it all gone wrong?
Ronan couldn’t figure it out and could only drown his sorrows in alcohol.
Once tipsy, all his suppressed forbidden feelings came rushing out, and he couldn’t help but call [sabella.
She didn’t pick up until the fourth call, and all he could hear was soft breathing.
He listened in his drunken haze, his voice heavy and slurred.
‘Isabella, it’s my fault. I was wrong to keep ignoring you. I’m sorry. I know you still have feelings for ne–marrying my uncle is just your way of getting back at me, right?”
‘Divorce him and come back to me, okay? I promise I’ll give you everything–the wedding, the ring, he dress. I’ll be devoted to you from now on…”
He rambled on in a low voice, pouring out all his conflicted emotions.
But there was only silence on the other end.
The endless quiet started driving Ronan crazy.
“Isabella, why aren’t you saying anything-”
“Honey, where’s the hair dryer?”

Hearing that familiar voice faintly through the phone made Ronan’s breathing stop.
The next second, he heard Lucius’s voice, crystal clear and close to the phone.
“Just a sec, I’ll get it for you.”
After that gentle response, his tone turned ice–cold.
“Ronan, your priority right now should be giving the police an explanation, not harassing the aunt you’ve hurt repeatedly.”
The line went dead with a sharp beep.
Ronan’s heart plummeted into the darkness.
Meanwhile, Lucius was blow–drying Isabella’s hair.
She applied moisturizer while casually asking, “Did someone call just now?”
Lucius nodded and told her honestly.
“Ronan got drunk again and called to ramble incoherently. I gave him a piece of my mind.”
*Gave him a piece of his mind?*
Using that phrase about Ronan struck Isabella as oddly formal.
But remembering their new aunt–nephew relationship, she felt a strange sense of satisfaction and couldn’t help but dig deeper.
“From your tone, it sounds like you discipline him regularly. But you’re only six years older than
him, right?”
Seeing her curiosity, Lucius chuckled softly.
‘When he was in kindergarten, he was being a brat and deliberately pulled away a chair, causing his grandfather to fall and break his hip. He was hospitalized for half a month. I gave Ronan such a beating that ever since, he acts like a mouse seeing a cat whenever I’m around.”
So that’s where the psychological trauma came from.
Isabella finally understood.

“If he’s that scared of you, how do you see him?”
Lucius paused, various complex emotions flickering in his eyes.
After a long moment, he carefully chose his words.
“Too impulsive, not mature enough, can’t handle real responsibility.”
It was a pretty fair assessment.
Impressed by Lucius’s perceptive judgment, Isabella couldn’t help asking what he thought of her.
This time, he hesitated even longer.
“Smart, rational, decisive. Most importantly, excellent judgment.”
In two lifetimes, Isabella had never heard anyone describe her with those words.
Only she knew these traits had been earned through blood and tears.
Seven years of emotional neglect in marriage, her daughter’s tragic death, the bedridden, depressed final days…
Even though it was all in the distant past now, just thinking about it still haunted her.
She leaned against Lucius’s chest, listening to his heartbeat until those dark emotions gradually faded away.
Everything was a fresh start.
