Chapter 23
The next second, a crushing force slammed into him as shattered glass flew everywhere.
Blood poured out like a fountain.
Spreading faster than the excruciating pain was an endless sense of confusion and emptiness.
Before losing consciousness, Ronan used his last bit of strength to tear off the necklace he wore
around his neck.
The smashed car stereo was still softly playing a song:
“I once had you, and it breaks my heart.“*
Isabella learned about Ronan’s accident eight hours after it happened.
That night, their family was still staying at the estate.
Both girls had fallen asleep, still mumbling in their dreams about saving a piece of cake.
The couple thought they were still thinking about the castle cake and were discussing ordering a new one tomorrow when Lucius received a phone call.
His smiling face instantly turned serious as he quickly threw on his clothes.
“My brother says Ronan’s been in an accident. I’m going to the hospital to check on things. Isabella, stay here with the kids and Dad. Let’s keep this quiet for now.”
Isabella was also shocked by this news.
She’d thought that keeping Lucius home would help them avoid disaster, but she never imagined Ronan would be the one to get hurt.
Same date, same reason for the accident, another member of the Moretti family…
All these coincidences together made her wonder: was this fate being unavoidable, or was someone pulling the strings?
If it really was destiny, why would Ronan have to bear the consequences meant for Lucius?

Chapter 21
If it was a deliberate accident, then who could harbor such hatred toward the Moretti family?
Isabella thought about it all night but couldn’t come up with any leads.
At dawn, she received a text from Lucius.
*”Resuscitation failed.“*.
Just four simple words, but Isabella understood their meaning completely.
She clenched her fists and closed her eyes.
Her heart, which had been racing with panic all night, suddenly plummeted into an abyss.
After all these years, she’d actually let go of past grievances.
She’d only thought of Ronan as a distant relative by marriage.
But there had been over ten years of shared history between them. Hearing news of his death so suddenly still left her struggling to breathe.
More than sadness, her emqtions were closer to confusion and helplessness.
There was resignation about an old friend’s passing.
And fear of life’s unpredictability.
After the funeral, Lucius shared the investigation results with Isabella.
“Police say it was premeditated murder, but they don’t have any information about the perpetrator yet. The car had no license plates–police think it was stolen from a junkyard. They’re still investigating… From the moment of impact until the doctors declared him dead, Ronan was clutching a necklace. We don’t know if the killer left it or if it has some other significance.”
Hearing this, Isabella frowned slightly.
“A necklace? What kind of necklace?”
Lucius pulled out a photo he’d taken at the hospital and showed it to her.
With just one glance, Isabella recognized the blood–stained necklace.

Chapter 23
It was the coming–of–age gift Ronan had given her.
The day before her wedding to Lucius, she’d torn it off and given it back to him.
She never would have imagined that after all this time, he’d still kept it.
Emotions surged through her heart.
Besides that, a thought kept flashing through her mind.
But she couldn’t quite grasp what it was yet.
