Skye’s POV
Alpha King Xavier, haven’t the prison guards and medical examiner already submitted their reports? Elder Selene barely glanced at the documents Xavier handed her, placing them on the desk without interest.
Alpha Thomas bribed a guard, obtained a silver dagger, and committed suicide. Are you questioning the Supreme Court as well?*
I watched Elder Selene’s dismissive gesture, feeling my frustration grow. We had come to her office hoping she would help us investigate what was clearly a suspicious death, but her attitude suggested she had no intention of looking deeper.
“Elder Selene, I’ve always respected you,” Xavier said, his voice tightening with anger. “I can’t believe you don’t see that someone orchestrated this. Alpha Thomas denied any wrongdoing before his arrest. Why would he suddenly commit suicide? With his resources, he could have hired the best werewolf attorneys.”
Adrian nodded beside me. “Alpha Thomas had absolutely no motive for suicide.”
Elder Selene swept her gaze across the three of us, her eyes lingering momentarily on each face. Her office felt suddenly cold despite the morning sunlight streaming through tall windows.
“And what exactly do you propose?” she asked. “Continue the investigation?”
“Of course,” I replied immediately. “We don’t just want a conclusion. We want the truth.”
Elder Selene let out a cold laugh. “The truth? What if this truth comes at the cost of peace? If you don’t want to trigger a large–scale civil war, I advise you to let this matter rest.”
Her attitude disappointed me deeply. I had respected the Elders, especially Selene who had a reputation for wisdom and fairness. But now she seemed determined to obstruct justice.
“Are you afraid your own crimes will be exposed?” I challenged her. “That day I heard everything. Thomas mentioned your granddaughter’s
eyes.”
Elder Selene’s expression hardened. “Using the eyes of a murderous monster to give my granddaughter sight? I see nothing wrong with that!”
Adrian leaned forward. “But did you know that Thomas didn’t just harm rogues and criminals? He also mutilated homeless children.”
The room fell silent after his accusation. Elder Selene’s expression hardened, but I caught a flicker of something in her eyes. Uncertainty?
Guilt?
“This world has never had absolute light,” she finally said. “There are always shadows beneath the sunshine. If you continue this investigation, you’ll only cause civil war. More children will lose their homes, their parents, their arms and legs, their lives! If that’s what you want, I have nothing more to say.”
Adrian, Xavier, and I fell silent, considering her words. The weight of potential consequences settled heavily in the room. Was she right? Would pursuing justice lead to more suffering?
“These are just excuses for our inaction,” Adrian finally said. “I admit that thoroughly investigating this now might cause unrest, but that doesn’t mean we should abandon the truth.”
Xavier nodded firmly. “I have four years to fight them!”
Elder Selene shook her head. “You’re all still too young.”
She walked to her window, looking out at the Council grounds. “The owner of the hotel where you’re staying was my childhood friend. We grew up in the same pack. But did you know her husband nearly died from heart disease several years ago? He was only saved by a heart transplant

at Alpha Thomas’s hospital. As for where that heart came from, she never dared to ask,
She turned back to face us. “In this world, how many people are completely innocent? Are you planning to send all these people to prison too?
“Personal misfortune is not an excuse for evil,” Adrian replied firmly. “Oasisborn Pack has many who’ve suffered unfair fates or painful torment. But we never chose to turn our blades toward those weaker than ourselves.”
Just then, the phone on Elder Selene’s desk rang. She answered it while maintaining eye contact with us, not bothering to seek privacy.
“Yes, send him in,” she said before hanging up.
“Someone wants to meet you,” Elder Selene informed us, straightening papers on her desk.
Xavier snorted. “Let me guess, Alpha Thomas’s family or one of his allies?” He shook his head slightly. “I know exactly what they’re planning.
“Is that so, Alpha King Xavier?” A smooth voice came from the doorway.
A man approximately Adrian’s age entered the room. He was tall with perfectly styled dark hair and eyes so deep brown they appeared almost black. His tailored suit probably cost more than what most werewolves earned in months. His posture spoke of privilege and power, shoulders squared with the confidence of someone who had never questioned his place in the world.
“This is Alpha Logan, Alpha Thomas’s son,” Elder Selene introduced him.
Logan nodded politely to each of us. “Alpha King Xavier, congratulations on your election,” he said to Xavier, voice smooth as silk. Then he turned to Adrian. “Alpha Adrian, your performance in this election truly impressed everyone.”
I studied him carefully. There was no trace of grief on his face, not even the slightest hint that his father had just died. His expression remained pleasant, almost cheerful.
Just when I thought he wouldn’t acknowledge me, Logan approached and extended his hand. “You must be Miss Skye. It’s a pleasure to meet
you.”
I hesitantly shook his hand, finding his skin unnaturally cool. His manners were impeccable, every movement graceful and deliberate. I
wondered if people who grew up surrounded by power and wealth evolved beyond normal human emotions, able to wear masks of politeness regardless of circumstances.
Xavier clearly wasn’t impressed by Logan’s polished demeanor. He crossed his arms and addressed him directly.
“What brings you to see us, Alpha Logan?”
