Chapter 3
As I spoke, I rolled out of bed to snatch back the gemstone necklace. Brant’s face turned ice–cold as he stepped forward to block me.
“Ha! Look how lively you are–you definitely bribed the doctors to back up your lies!”
“Vivian, you’re just a maid. What gives you the right to lay hands on my wife!”
Selene stood behind Brant, flashing me a mocking smile.
I’d had enough. I fixed my gaze on Brant.
“Sounds like Mr. Miller bribes doctors to lie so often that his mind immediately jumps there, doesn’t it?”
Brant’s face instantly turned deathly pale.
He whipped around to lock eyes with Selene–both of them looking absolutely horrified.
“Vivian, what nonsense are you spouting? Who gave you the nerve to talk to your employer like that?”
I let out a cold laugh.
“Take off that necklace and give it back to me! Otherwise I’m calling the police and charging you with burglary!”
Selene’s face flushed bright red as she tugged on Brant’s sleeve, stomping her feet in rage.
“Honey, I can’t even wear a necklace without getting grief! Just fire this disrespectful maid!”
Brant clenched his hands into fists, his expression vicious.
“Vivian, know your place!”
The moment those words left his mouth, he suddenly grabbed his head with both hands and let out a pained groan.
Selene immediately wrapped her arms around Brant, tears instantly streaming down her face.
“Honey, what’s wrong?! Don’t get upset–let me take you to see a doctor!”
The two of them left arm in arm, and the hospital room fell silent once again.
Pure theatrics from start to finish.
I knew Brant was afraid his charade would be exposed. He wanted me scared, wanted me panicked so I’d overlook the details that gave him away.
But he had no idea I already knew everything.
I returned to the bed and pulled Amy, who was curled up in the corner, into my arms. We sat quietly for a moment.

Chapter 3
“Amy, Mommy will never give you to anyone else. Should we leave together?”
Amy wrapped her arms around my neck and nodded fiercely.
I took Amy home, planning to grab some documents from the bedroom, but then I heard Brant and Selene’s voices again.
“Brant, you promised Amy would be my daughter. You can’t go back on your word.”
My heart lurched.
Before, I’d thought Brant wanted Selene to become Amy’s legal adoptive mother just to make their act more convincing.
I never imagined he actually intended to give Amy to Selene for real!
“Don’t worry, I always keep my promises.”
“I know you can’t have children and want one of your own. I get it–don’t stress about it. I’ll handle Vivian.”
“But she’s compromised on everything else except Amy. She’s got a death grip on that kid. What can you do about it?”
“I’ll keep faking episodes to scare her. That stupid woman will definitely fall for it.”
Soon, the discussion in the room turned into soft, intimate sounds. I knew they’d moved on to bedroom activities.
I stood outside the door, hand pressed to my chest, taking forever to feel alive again.
Brant Miller–I never knew you could be heartless enough to use your wife of eight years as a pawn and treat our daughter like a gift, all to please your first love.
I used to be against marriage until Brant won me over and made me abandon that stance. But we’d only had a wedding ceremony–we never got a legally binding marriage certificate.
After Amy was born, since Brant and I had no legal proof of being husband and wife, we’d never been able to get her official identification documents.
If I hadn’t discovered Brant’s lies, Amy wouldn’t be my daughter anymore!
A chill ran down my spine. I frantically scooped up Amy, rushed back to the maid’s quarters, packed our essentials, and quickly booked flights out of town.
Bank cards, property deeds… thankfully, everything was in my name with no connection to Brant whatsoever.
Too bad none of it could compensate for my parents‘ gemstone necklace or the eight years I’d wasted on Brant.
