Chapter 4
I contacted the insurance company and reported my gemstone necklace as stolen, asking them to investigate the next day.
Then I picked up Amy, ready to leave.
As we passed the bedroom, the door happened to open.
Brant’s eyes met mine, filled with surprise.
“Vivian? Weren’t you sick? Why are you back?”
Hearing this, Selene came over in disheveled clothes, looking me up and down. Fresh love marks were still visible on her neck.
“Vivian! If you dare do anything to my daughter, Brant will never forgive you!”
The concern on Brant’s face quickly turned to rage as he grabbed my wrist.
“Vivian, don’t push your luck. We only let you be Amy’s personal maid out of consideration for her. Remember–Selene is Amy’s biological mother!”
Amy squirmed uncomfortably, her little hands batting at the arm gripping mine.
“Bad man, don’t hit my mommy!”
Thinking about our flight taking off in two hours, I held Amy still.
“Amy, don’t make a fuss. I’m just the maid.”
“Mr. Miller, I need to take Amy to the amusement park now. Please let go.”
Brant seemed shocked by my compliance, his eyes filled with disbelief.
That shock quickly turned to glee, and Brant instructed me to return early so he and Selene could go file paperwork to make Selene Amy’s legal mother.
My heart felt dead as I nodded silently and carried Amy out the door.
Too bad our destination wasn’t the amusement park. I took Amy straight to the airport.
While waiting in the departure lounge, Brant called.
I didn’t answer, so he called Amy’s phone instead.
Amy casually picked up and said “Daddy,” which was immediately met with Brant’s furious roar.
“So you do know I’m your father?”

Chapter 4
“Where did you and that maid Vivian go? It’s so late and you’re still not back–does she have a death wish?!”
Amy pouted, gripping her boarding pass as she looked at me.
“You like Aunt Selene so much, why do you care about us?”
“I’ve told you a million times–Selene is your biological mother! If you call me Dad, you have to call her Mom! Don’t let that scheming maid Vivian mislead you–she’s nothing to you!”
“Amy, as long as you tell Vivian you’re willing to accept Selene as your mother, Daddy promises he’ll remember everything soon.”
After his anger came temptation.
Amy usually loved being with both her parents–this condition was probably Brant’s latest scheme to manipulate
her.
Just thinking about Brant using business tactics on our own daughter made my heart ache uncontrollably.
I’d been so wrong to ever think I could spend my life with someone like this.
Seeing my pale face, Amy quietly called out “Mommy.”
Hearing this, Brant immediately hung up.
He knew Amy’s phone was Selene’s old one that had been barely repaired–the speaker leaked sound badly, making every call loud enough for others to hear.
So he could guess that I’d heard his attempts to manipulate Amy.
Brant must be panicking right now.
But that was no longer my concern.
From the moment I discovered Brant’s amnesia was a lie, nothing about him mattered to me anymore.
Brant started calling my phone frantically.
When I didn’t answer, he began texting.
[Vivian, why aren’t you answering your employer’s calls? Aren’t you afraid I’ll dock your pay?!]
[Where did you take my daughter? Bring her back now or I’m calling the police!]
[I know you raised Amy and love her, but she’s ultimately mine and Selene’s child.]
[Answer the phone–where are you?]
[Why aren’t you back yet? What the hell are you doing?!]
