Chapter 7
I suddenly felt exhausted.
What gave him the right to be so arrogant, thinking I’d easily forgive him after he’d hurt me and our daughter with his pathetic lies?
“Brant Miller, do you remember what I told you here eight years ago?”
“I said I could try being with you, but you must never lie to me. If I ever found out, I’d leave.”
“You promised me then. You said you’d never lie to me for the rest of your life.”
Brant hung his head deeply, one hand gripping the iron bars so tightly that veins bulged on the back of his hand.
He thought for a long time before hesitantly speaking.
“I lost my mind for a moment, Vivian… Selene and I were together for five whole years.”
“Later she accidentally lost her ability to have children, and her family forced us apart…”
“I don’t know what came over me. The moment I saw her, I remembered everything from before. I couldn’t control myself. I’m sorry.”
I shook my head.
“The person you should apologize to most is Amy. Your daughter. Because of you, she hasn’t enjoyed family happiness in so long.”
“Brant, you’re here begging me to get back together only because you’ve realized you ended up with no one–not me, not Selene.”
“What if I hadn’t discovered your lies? What would you be doing now? Would you keep deceiving me, making me your maid and forcing Amy to call Selene ‘Mom“?”
Brant’s face turned deathly pale, his lips moving soundlessly.
But I knew the answer.
He really would have given Amy to Selene.
He’d forgotten that Amy was the child I nearly died giving birth to, forgotten how Amy loved holding both our hands, and forgotten that he was Amy’s father.
In that moment, his eyes held only Selene–not me, his wife of eight years, not Amy, his own flesh and blood.
I waved my hand wearily.
“Go investigate. That car accident you had wasn’t an accident.”

Brant’s head snapped up, his eyes showing surprise.
“That’s impossible, Vivian. Are you asking me to suspect Selene?! How could you think that?”
“She wants a child, but she’s not as shameless as you think!”
“We hadn’t seen each other for eight whole years–it was just coincidence!”
“I admit she wanted Amy as her daughter, and that was wrong, but she’s not evil at heart!”
Too tired to argue with him, I simply turned and left, leaving Brant alone outside the gate.
The next morning, I received a call from the insurance company: Selene was refusing to return my parents‘ necklace.
Brant had been pacing outside the estate gates, but shortly after I took the call, he hurried away.
I knew Selene must be calling Brant for help.
Too bad… no matter who she called for help, what she’d taken from me had to be returned.
Soon Brant’s call came through.
“Vivian, why did you insure a necklace for so much money?” he demanded.
I smiled, completely unsurprised.
“Brant, I knew you’d forgotten again. That’s my parents‘ memento–of course I treasure it.”
He seemed to grit his teeth before continuing.
“Vivian, let’s forget about Amy, but Selene really loves this necklace. Could you possibly…”
I refused firmly.
“Absolutely not. Don’t even think about it. Either pay the insurance company a hundred million, or return it exactly
as it was.”
This seemed like two choices, but there was really only one outcome.
Brant could only ask this because he hadn’t discovered yet that I’d taken all his liquid assets.
And those funds were actually in my name anyway–they were mine.
Brant sighed.
“Vivian, I wronged Selene first by abandoning her back then.”
“I feel guilty about her. Now you’ve taken Amy away, and she really loves this necklace. Could you help me out?”
“No.”

I refused decisively and quickly hung up.
Whatever debts or grievances existed between them had nothing to do with me.
Why should my daughter and I get dragged into their drama, become bystanders in their love–hate entanglement, and consider their feelings?
