“Eat first, then you can have this back.”
“This is the first time someone has ever dared to speak to me like that.” Logan frowned, his metallic eyes burning cold as they gazed up at me.
“It’s my duty as your fiancée to make sure you’re taking care of yourself.” Logan’s gaze continued to grow colder, and his frown grew thinner as he pursed his lips.
For a moment, my nerves started to fray. I might have overstepped. Making demands of an Alpha wasn’t truly my place, especially not from a contractual Luna. I was about to apologize and give him back the file, but Logan did something more surprising.
“Very well,” he said, “but on one condition.”
“What is it?”
“Get your lunch and come eat with me,” he said. I grinned and quickly went to get my
– lunch. I sat in the chair on the opposite side of his desk.
The food was even more amazing than it looked. And the company wasn’t too bad either. We didn’t have much to say to each other. I asked a few questions about the kitchen, and Logan
answered me without hesitation.
“What’s your favorite food?” Logan asked me as we were nearly done with lunch. It was the first personal question he had ever asked me.
It took me a little off guard. For a moment, it almost felt like we were on a date. A very formal, very cold date.
“I’m not sure if I have one specific favorite food,” I answered. Lots of things came to mind. I simply enjoyed good food in general, so I can’t imagine picking one.
“There must be something you like.”

I tried to think of all the meals I’d had in the past. One particular memory came to mind.
Whenever I was sick or was having a bad day, my mom would always serve me breakfast in bed. We’d eat together in the comfort of my room, and it made it seem like everything was right in the world.
“I guess it would have to be breakfast in bed. There’s something really fun and delicious about having chocolate chip pancakes or over easy eggs when you’re all cozy in your bed.” Logan chuckled a bit.
“What about you?” I asked.
“Steak,” he said simply. I laughed a little, looking down at our plates. His was perfectly clean, not even a spare drop of chimichurri left over.
“I should’ve guessed,” I said. I picked up both our empty plates. “I’ll let you get back to work now.” I went back to my desk, and I set the plates down on the corner so I could return
them to the kitchen at the end of the day.
That might have been the most awkward lunch I ever had. But it wasn’t too bad.
A couple of hours went by before a middle–aged woman stopped in front of my desk. I recognized her almost immediately.
She was Dorothy Cunningham, a famous lawyer. She was a beast in the courtroom and had a very high win rate. She was so highly sought after that she was able to pick and choose her cases. Even royal aristocrats couldn’t book her if she wasn’t interested in their cases.
A lawyer like her could make a case. When I was putting together materials for a lawsuit, I also considered lawyers. Dorothy Cunningham was a dream lawyer. I’d have never actually
approached her since she was so far out of my reach.
“Greetings, Mrs. Cunningham,” I greeted immediately. “I’m Emily Crowley, Alpha Logan’s
new assistant. And his fiancée.”
I stood up and held out my hand for a shake. She took my hand, shaking it in one short
movement.

Chapter 28
She was a tall woman with curly black hair that was graying a little bit. Her eyes were an incredibly dark shade of brown. She wore a violet pant suit and carried a briefcase. She had a dignified and noble aura that made me want to trust her immediately.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Crowley,” she said, her voice stern yet soft. I already could see why she was such a success in the courtroom. She was well put together, in a simple but effective way. Although she spoke to me gently, I picked up on the authoritative tone in her
voice and in her stature.
I wished I could be like her.
“I’ll let the Alpha know you’re here to see him,” I said, about ready to go tell Logan he had a
visitor. Dorothy stopped me.
“Actually, I’m here to talk to you,” she said.
“Me?” I asked, my eyebrows raised. I didn’t know if I was flattered or afraid. Maybe she was
here to serve me papers.
“The Alpha provided me with details of your case and asked for me to take you on as a client,” said Dorothy. I peered around the edge of the door to where Logan sat at his desk. His desk was all the way on the other side of the room, and I could barely see him. But I was
amazed by him all the same.
“What kind of conditions did he offer?” I asked.
“He came to me personally with a very generous offer.”
Logan was sincerely helping me. For a moment, I was overwhelmed with his kindness.
Never had I expected I would have the best lawyer on my side. And it was Logan who made that possible.
“I’m so amazed, thank you so much,” I said.
“Beyond that, I actually knew your mother, and I am happy to help her daughter,” said Dorothy with a big smile.

“You knew my mother?”

“Yes, I always admired Ava. She was a strong, female Alpha. When I was in law school, she was my role model. I kept remembering her strength and tenacity and would be able to work through even the hardest of days.”
I placed my hand on my heart, touched by her words all the way to my core. Not many people had said such wonderful things about my mother to me. All I heard was horrible comments from Hannah and Chloe.
Knowing that someone else out there thought fondly of my mother made me feel like she
was still with me.
To hear it from Dorothy was even greater. I had viewed her as a role model growing up, just like I had admired my own mother.
“I’m so glad to hear that,” I said, my eyes growing watery.
“Your Alpha reminded me of all this when he came to visit yesterday. We have a long road ahead of us to win your case, but it will be worth it. I want to clear Ava’s name and restore her daughter’s inheritance. It is the least I can do,” Dorothy said.
Logan had done all of this. He had even mentioned restoring my mother’s honor, which was
far more important than any money she would have left me.
I looked back into the office again where Logan was quietly working.
I fought back tears. This was the most thoughtful and caring thing he had ever done for me.
I don’t even know when he found the time. But he made the time for me. And it meant more
than he could ever imagine.
