Clement’s expression darkened further as he took a few steps forward. Freya instinctively stepped back. He spoke with deep frustration, “Freya, you must have been brainwashed by Louis! How could you think like this? I really like you! Louis is only holding on to you because he’s broke now. You can’t be this foolish!”
“Stop! Don’t come any closer!” Freya immediately raised her voice to stop him. “You keep saying you like me, yet even after seeing me struggling with these heavy bags, you didn’t think to help me at first. Is this what you call love? You’ve probably only ever played with women and never truly cared for one! In any case, abandoning my husband when he’s down is something only a heartless person would do. I will never leave him at a time like this, so you’d better give up now. Even if I do leave him one day, it will be only when he no longer needs me.”
Clement was about to argue when a sudden burst of applause and cheers erupted nearby.
“Well said, young lady! That’s the right way to think!”
“That’s right! If more people thought this way, there wouldn’t be so many divorces. What a good girl. Your husband didn’t marry in vain!”
Freya finally noticed a group of elderly men and women standing nearby. They were clearly returning from their morning exercise and had been listening the whole time.
One of the elderly men stepped forward and gave Clement a once–over, shaking his head repeatedly. “Oh, young man, this girl is living her life with her husband, and you come here trying to steal her away? That’s just not right. Think about it, how would you feel if you were married and some man kept trying to take your wife? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!”
A woman in a red coat took a step closer. “Exactly! You say her husband is broke, so she should leave him for you. But can you guarantee you’ll never have a day when you run out of money? If that happens, does that mean your wife should leave you for a richer man? If this girl really abandoned her husband for you, would you even dare to take her?”
If there were any groups of people in this world one should avoid provoking, they were teenagers and the elderly. It was as if someone had flipped a switch, the group of elderly folks all began scolding Clement, not giving him a chance to refute, Within minutes, he was painted as a morally corrupt, shameless scoundrel beyond redemption.
Freya quickly stepped aside, suppressing her laughter as she called out from behind the crowd, “Sirs and madams, this guy really needs to be taught a lesson. You all should educate him properly. I have to head home and cook, so I’ll be going now. Let’s chat another time!”
The elderly folks waved her off enthusiastically. “Go on home, we’ll handle this!”
Not far away, Louis and Derek sat in their car, watching the entire scene unfold. Neither of them moved for a long while. It was only when they saw Clement finally admit his mistakes and get dismissed by the elderly group that Derek, still in disbelief, spoke up. “Louis, that was Ms. Stone just now, right? Why does it feel like she’s a completely different person?” Louis, also seeing this side of his wife for the first time, had never paid her much attention before. “It’s her.”
“Well, Ms. Stone is actually a really good person. She used to just spend money, but now that you’re bankrupt in name, she refuses to leave you. She’d rather suffer than abandon you, not out of love, but out of principle. Just like those elderly folks said, her values are too righteous.”
