Louis took a few steps back to make room, and Freya quickly squeezed past him. “Uh… you go ahead and wash up. I’m heading to bed. Goodnight.”
It wasn’t until she got back to her room that Freya realized–she hadn’t smelled any alcohol on Louis.
Didn’t he go to a drinking party? Or maybe he was working late instead. I still don’t actually know what he does for a living…
She thought about it for a second, then climbed into bed and went to sleep.
Life continued, day by day, until–before she knew it–it was the day before Aiden started school. Naturally, Louis was going to take him for check–in, but Aiden had been trying for days to convince Freya to come too. Today was no different.
“Freya, once I go. I’ll be living on campus. I’ll only be able to come back once a week. Won’t you miss me? Don’t you even wanna see what my school looks like?”
The once–proud little guy had, after nearly a month of living together, fully shed his act and turned into a clingy, chatty little imp. Holding his fork, he looked straight at Freya and said all this–clearly meant for Louis to hear.
Louis had been busy for the past few days and was only just now back for dinner. He was most likely home because he had to take the kid to school tomorrow–and right on cue, the kid dropped that line.
“Isn’t your school kind of brutal? You’re just in elementary school and they’re already cutting into your vacation? Even the government doesn’t allow cram schools anymore, and you guys still have to go carly.”
Freya didn’t take the bait. He hadn’t transferred yet–he was still attending that elite academy. She didn’t know a thing about that place and wouldn’t be of any use. She might even slow them down. No point in going.
“It’s not really cram school. We’re just learning some other stuff–not regular academics. So the government doesn’t care,” Aiden explained, shaking his head before jumping back to the original topic. “Come on, just go with me. Don’t you like me anymore?”
“But you’ll be back in a week. And even if I go, I won’t be any help. I might even slow you down while you’re getting your paperwork done. That’s just inconvenient.”
“It’s fine. My uncle’s going too. He’ll take care of everything. I just want you to come with me.” Aiden turned his head and looked to Louis. “Uncle, let Freya come with me, okay?”
“You want to go?” Louis finally set down his fork and looked at Freya.
“I don’t think I should. I don’t know how any of that works.”
“What do you need to know?” Louis looked up at her.
“I mean… I can’t help Aiden with his paperwork or anything. I’d just be standing around.”
“You don’t have to do anything, Freya. My uncle will take care of it,” Aiden quickly chimed in.
“You can just go check out the campus with Aiden. You don’t need to do anything else.” Louis gave Aiden a light pat on the head. “Eat properly.”
“Okay.” Aiden obediently went back to eating.
“Well… alright then.” Freya hesitated before agreeing. She had been planning to post an extra chapter the next day, but now she’d have to post a bit more tonight and after they got back. Her story had just gotten featured, and subscriptions were climbing fast–if she didn’t post extra content, it’d be unfair to her editor.
The next morning, Freya got up early and made breakfast. After the three of them ate, Aiden put on his backpack, Louis picked up his bedding and other items, and Freya, quick on the uptake, grabbed Aiden’s suitcase.
The three of them headed out together–Louis driving–to take Aiden to school.
