“If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t be living like this! Our profits got cut in half–how is that not his fault?” the woman said righteously, as if she had every reason to complain.
Freya laughed coldly. “If it weren’t for Louis, Graham Corp would’ve been barely limping along long ago. Your dividends would’ve dropped by at least two–thirds. Even when the company was transferred later, he still made sure your family’s interests were properly protected. And here you are, running your mouth without an ounce of shame. I guess you’ve gotten so used to living off others that you’ve forgotten what the word ‘dignity‘ even means.”
The woman’s face turned red. That smothered anger flared right back up, and she raised her hand, ready to hit Freya.
But Freya caught her wrist mid–air before it got anywhere close. Still smiling sweetly, she held it firmly in place.
“Angry, huh? Well, that won’t get you far. People who can actually accomplish things–do you see them throwing tantrums every day? Let me give you a little advice. What goes around comes around. Just because Louis is down now doesn’t mean he won’t rise again. Don’t go thinking life is as simple as a TV drama or a romance novel. Reality’s a bit more complicated than that.”
“You’re absolutely right, Freya!” Aiden’s voice popped in as he came walking over with a tray. He plunked two bowls of pasta down on the table and turned to the woman. “It’s already noon, and our family’s not exactly rolling in money these days. You’re not still planning on mooching a meal off us, are you?”
“Aiden, you-”
“Hold it. You don’t get to call me that. That’s what my uncle and Freya call me. You and I aren’t nearly close enough for that. And by the way, who knows what really happened with my parents‘ car accident? You lot haven’t exactly cleared yourselves of suspicion.”
Aiden rolled his eyes, tugged Freya away from the woman and into a seat, He handed her a fork.
“That car accident had nothing to do with us!” the woman snapped. “We didn’t get any of your parents‘ shares. Someone’s clearly been putting things in your head.”
Aiden didn’t even look fazed. He plopped into his own seat. “You think everyone’s as dumb as you are? My uncle told me exactly what happened. Every single one of you got a slice of their shares. But that doesn’t matter. What matters right now is you’re ruining our lunch. Today’s the first day of school, and I specially invited Freya to come with me. If someone ruins it, well… I’m just a kid. Who knows what I might do?”
He lifted his spoon and scooped up a forkful of pasta, then started waving it around like he was about to fling it.
“Oh no,” he said dramatically, “my hand’s been real shaky lately. What if something slips?”
The woman instinctively took a step back. “You’re really becoming more and more disrespectful!”
“My uncle says respect is earned,” Aiden said with wide, innocent eyes. Then he turned to Freya. “Freya, did I that right?”

Freya was calmly picking out chili flakes from her bowl. “You said it just fine. But when you write it later, make sure you don’t mess up the spelling.“/
“Yup, I will. I’ve got great study habits!”
