Chapter 128 Adaptation
Chapter 128 Adaptation

That response was so perfunctory. Not a shred of sincerity in it. Freya pouted slightly but decided not to fuss over it with Louis. The man was a big shot, after all–dealing in tens of millions like it was pocket change. Why would he care about someone as insignificant as her? Even if her novel did get adapted, the payout would be in the low millions at most–barely enough for him to buy a car.
Louis had meant to say a few more words, but Freya clearly wasn’t in the mood to chat anymore. Once they got home, she was already buried in her manuscript. Seeing that she didn’t seem upset, Louis simply went off to handle his own matters.
A few days later, Louis had just walked through the front door when he spotted Freya bouncing and twirling in the living room. The moment she saw him, she froze like a statue. He raised an eyebrow. “What are you doing?”
Freya instantly plopped herself back down on her usual spot, giving him an awkward grin. “Nothing. I just got a message from my editor. Someone’s interested in adapting my book.”
“Oh. Congratulations.” Louis switched his shoes at the entryway, then caught sight of the overflowing trash can stuffed with snack wrappers. He hesitated, but couldn’t stop himself from commenting, “Just because you’re happy doesn’t mean you should treat your body like trash. Ease up on the junk food.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Freya nodded hurriedly, though the words went in one ear and out the other. She had no time to worry about that now. “Hey, I’m buying dinner tonight. What do you say?”
If this adaptation deal went through, she’d be looking at a payday of over a million. Even after taxes, it’d be enough to buy a small house. More importantly, once she had a successful adaptation under her belt, her name would start to carry weight. Future books would fetch much higher prices, and she could finally stop worrying about money.
Plus, her editor had just promised to negotiate for her to take on the screenwriter role. If that worked out, it’d be another big check in the bank. Life was looking sweet.
Freya hadn’t been this excited in ages–not even when she bought her own place. Seeing her practically glowing, Louis accepted her invitation. “Alright.”
This time, Freya didn’t take him to the usual snack street. That kind of thing was fun once, but twice would just make her look cheap and unsophisticated. Besides, she’d just gotten major good news–how could she not treat Louis to something nice? So she brought him to a private kitchen restaurant she’d found while researching online.
The budget she set was just over a thousand dollars. Painful, but manageable. Before heading out, she gave herself a serious pep talk: Louis was the first person she met in this world, and they were technically housemates now. Besides, who knew- maybe he’d make a comeback someday, and if he remembered how she treated him now, he might help her out when she hit a rough patch. And so on.
Louis pulled the car into the lot as directed and was genuinely a little surprised. This woman, who usually pinched every penny, had actually picked a place this expensive. It was totally out of character.
“I know you’re not really used to this kind of life,” Freya said. “Normally I’d never splurge like this, but hey, I just got some good news. Let’s indulge for once. It’s my treat–eat whatever you want.”
She puffed up with pride and made a bold gesture like a queen throwing a banquet. Louis, who would’ve considered this place just average back when he was wealthy, had to admit that–under current circumstances–it was quite the luxury. The whole thing amused him, but he played along. “Well then, thank you for the meal.”
