A hundred possible reasons flashed through her mind, but none of them really held water. In the end, Freya went with what sounded like the most reasonable excuse.
“You’re about to make your comeback. If we get divorced now, it won’t interfere with you finding someone new later. Besides, separating now means I won’t get blinded by money down the line and start having other ideas. People change. The best way to avoid testing human nature is to not give it a chance. If we split now, there won’t be any disputes over money in the future.”
The tapping of Louis‘ finger slowed, and his tightly furrowed brows began to loosen.
“If I end up rich and powerful, even if we divorce later, it wouldn’t stop me from finding someone else. So that reason doesn’t hold up. As for you turning greedy, that contradicts everything you just said about yourself. And even if that did happen, I wouldn’t begrudge you a little money. That excuse doesn’t hold either.”
“Then what’s the real reason?”
Mentally exhausted. Freya just threw something out. “Fine, I just think keeping things like this isn’t sustainable. If we’re destined to go our separate ways eventually, then why drag it out? The sooner we get divorced, the sooner we both return to normal life. Isn’t that a good thing?”
“So I’m supposed to carry the reputation of a man who dumps the wife who suffered with him through hard times?”
Freya blinked. “Huh?”
“In business, it’s mainly about capital, skill, and potential. But reputation also matters. If we get divorced now, and I make a comeback soon after, people will say I made my wife suffer with me in hardship and then dumped her once I was on the rise. If you were a businessperson, would you want to work with someone like that?”
“But… aren’t there lots of people who cheat or have mistresses? Their businesses don’t seem to suffer.”
“Then tell me how many serious businessmen have mistresses and treat their wives poorly? Try to force them out empty- handed, even? I’m talking about real businessmen, not nouveau riche.”
His tone was cool.
“Or better yet–how many successful entrepreneurs have stayed successful after mistreating the wife who helped them through hard times?”
Uh…
“But…” Freya’s face scrunched up. She had not expected any of this. “I don’t really know much about businesspeople… So you’re saying we can’t get divorced now?”
“You’ve been out there defending me plenty,” Louis said, leaning forward slightly. His tone grew chillier. “So if I divorce you now, it’ll look like I’m the ungrateful one.”
“I get it. But it’s not like you’ve done anything wrong to me,” Freya said immediately.
“Then why would you bring this up now, of all times?” Louis‘ voice turned icier.
“I didn’t mean anything by it! I didn’t think it through! You know I don’t understand your business world,” Freya said, feeling like she’d just stepped into a pit she dug herself. Heaven and earth could bear witness–she had not been trying to sabotage him!
She raised her right hand, swearing solemnly, “I swear, I never meant to mess with you. I really didn’t think it through! If I’m lying–if I really was trying to trap you–then may every single one of my novels fail to sell!”
