“If you really didn’t mean anything by it, do you still want a divorce now?” Louis leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, staring at Freya with an indifferent expression.
The weight of his gaze was intense–Freya could feel it pressing down on her. She must’ve touched a nerve. He was on the verge of rising again, and she’d just come along and deflated his tires. No wonder he was angry.
“Then… how about… we don’t get divorced for now? Maybe wait until you’ve fully made your comeback?” she offered tentatively.
Louis gave a slight nod–that counted as agreement. Freya finally breathed a little easier. At least she hadn’t completely pissed him off.
After dinner, Louis returned to his room. Freya washed the plates and sat down at her computer–only to realize something wasn’t quite right.
Going by Louis‘ logic, the divorce had to wait until his career stabilized. But how exactly was that measured? What counted as “stabilized“? What counted as a full comeback?
What if his business just kept growing and expanding? Did that mean she had to stay in this marriage forever, just tagging along?
No, wait. Louis would eventually need to settle down properly and start a family. He wasn’t going to stay entangled with her forever.
Well, whatever. She’d just consider it part of repaying him. She could afford to waste a bit more time at his side. After all, she hadn’t really expected to get out so quickly anyway. She comforted herself with that thought.
The next day, Freya’s life continued as usual. On the surface, her interactions with Louis seemed perfectly normal.
Louis finished breakfast and headed out. Once he got in the car, the air pressure around him seemed to drop. From the driver’s seat, Derek felt it immediately. He couldn’t help asking, “Something happen?”
“No. Why?”
“Well, the moment you got in, the air got heavy. Your face looks awful,” Derek said, pointing at the rearview mirror. “Don’t believe me? Look for yourself. You look like someone owes you a fortune.”
Only someone like Derek, who’d grown up with Louis, would dare speak to him like that. Anyone else wouldn’t have the guts.
Louis glanced up at the mirror–and for a fraction of a second, looked slightly surprised. The man in the mirror was leaning against the seat, face dark and eyes cold with impatience. And yet, he hadn’t even realized he was angry.
“Freya wants a divorce.”
He tossed the bombshell out casually, but it nearly made Derek swerve into the curb.
“What? A divorce?”
Hearing how shocked he was actually made Louis feel a little better. So it wasn’t just him who found it baffling–his reaction was perfectly normal. “That’s right. Divorce.”
Derek straightened the wheel and eased the car back into its lane, putting some distance between them and the pedestrian walkway.
“I mean… sure, when you first filed for bankruptcy, her wanting a divorce would’ve made sense. But then she turned around and insisted on staying–now suddenly she wants out again? Is she treating this marriage like some game?”
“She found out the project’s about to launch.”
“That makes even less sense. You’re about to bounce back–money and success are practically around the corner. And instead of cozying up to you, she wants a divorce? If she leaves now, she’s not getting much of anything.”

Derek shook his head, completely baffled. “We looked into her before–she doesn’t seem shady. It’s not like she’s colluding with anyone to sabotage you”
