“Come in first.” There was still a lot to sort out at the new company. Back at the old place, if either of them showed up, someone would escort them in immediately. But since they hadn’t been to the new office yet, Louis hadn’t thought to set up any special arrangements, which was why they ended up waiting outside.
Fortunately, some of the old employees still recognized them–otherwise, they probably wouldn’t have even made it to the top floor.
Ignoring Kendrick for the moment, Louis poured tea for both of them and turned to Waylon. “What’s up? Something happen?”
Waylon picked up his cup but didn’t drink. “A little while ago, my grandpa gave me a task. Said the daughter of a family friend was coming here for grad school and told me to look after her. Then as soon as she showed up, my grandpa basically packed her off and sent her straight to my place.”
Kendrick had been messing around on his phone, but the moment he heard that, he whipped his head around to look at Waylon. After the training he’d been through lately, the once–rebellious kid now had an interest in almost everything, and his face lit up like he was about to hear a juicy piece of gossip.
“Nice one, Waylon. You’re getting set up at home now? So, how is she? Is she hot?”
Waylon elbowed Kendrick in the side so hard that he yelped on the spot, face scrunching in pain. “Ow! What the hell, Waylon?!”
Louis reached out to press Kendrick back into his seat and patted his shoulder in silent reassurance. Then he turned back to Waylon. “Go on.”
Waylon’s face was dark. “At first, I thought she was some match my grandpa was trying to set me up with. But turns out that wasn’t it at all. My grandpa treats her better than he treats me–his own grandson. Keeps reminding me not to get any funny ideas. Says she’s not someone I can handle, and that we’re not even from the same world.”
“Classic reverse psychology,” Kendrick muttered irritably.
Waylon shot him a cold look, and the seriousness in his expression actually shut Kendrick up for once.
“I can tell when my grandpa’s being serious. Ever since she moved in, she’s gone out of her way not to bother me, keeping a very clear boundary. I’m sure she’s not here for me–she’s really just trying to prepare for grad school.”
Louis nodded. “So?”
“Louis,” Waylon said, his voice a little lower, eyes flickering with something strange, “can you help me find out what kind of people the Miller family really are?”
Hearing the unusually solemn tone, Kendrick straightened up a little. “The Miller family? Who’s that? I’ve never heard of them. What’s up with the girl? You’re the one with the private investigator contacts, aren’t you?”
Louis stared at Waylon for a moment. Waylon held his gaze steadily. Louis sighed and got up to make a call.
“There are some people–and some things–that you’re better off not getting involved with,” he said before leaving. “If it turns out your guess is right… then what?”
Waylon lowered his eyes. His voice was low and steady. “I don’t know. I haven’t figured it out yet. But it’s been so many years… and I finally meet someone I genuinely like. If I don’t find out, if I don’t try, I’ll never be at peace.”
Kendrick’s eyes widened. “Wait–Waylon, you like her?”
“That’s not the point right now,” Louis called from across the room. “First we confirm who she is. After that, then we can talk about feelings.”
Waylon slouched deeper into the couch, head tilted back, eyes blank as he stared at the ceiling. The sight made Kendrick uneasy. Aside from that one time years ago when Waylon stormed out and cut ties with his family, Kendrick had never seen him look like this.

“You okay, Waylon?” he asked cautiously.
