Waylon didn’t say a word, and Kendrick didn’t dare speak again either. After a while, Louis came back holding his phone, sat across from Waylon, and asked, “What’s her name?”
Waylon perked up and sat straighter. “Jasmine Miller. Her name is Jasmine.”
“Then that’s it. Last name Miller, and she has Jasmine in her name. They’re a family of priests. The Miller family has passed down their ancestors‘ profession for generations. From time to time, members of the family assist the authorities with investigations.”
Waylon leaned forward, urgent. “That’s all? Is there any more info?”
“There is. I just got word in private–they’ve recently sent a few of their most outstanding juniors out into the world for training. Their performance during this period will determine who gets chosen as the next successor. So the Jasmine you’re talking about isn’t just from the Miller family–she’s one of the elite, a direct descendant.”
Louis met Waylon’s desperate gaze and added, “The head of the Miller family is not allowed to marry.”
That sentence landed like a hammer blow straight to Waylon’s chest. He hesitated, then asked, “No exceptions?”
“Never. Also, I was told the most promising one among the younger generation is a girl who always wears a bright green hairpin.” As if the hit hadn’t been heavy enough, Louis added another.
Kendrick watched as Waylon’s face went pale.
Seriously? It’s just a woman. Waylon had always been carefree–how had he ended up like this? Kendrick couldn’t understand what made this Jasmine so special that Waylon would lose his cool like this.
“Come on, she’s just a girl. If she can’t marry, then forget it. There are plenty of fish in the sea. Waylon, I’ll hook you up with some beauties–you can take your pick.”
That sentence seemed to flip a switch. Waylon slapped the table, his frustration replaced by resolve.
“So she’s a priest–so what? I won’t know the outcome unless I try. If I can really get her to give up her family’s title for me, then the rest of my life is set. Someone who fits so well with me is rare. I’m not letting her go without a fight.”
Louis frowned, about to say something, when Waylon’s phone rang. He answered, listened for a few seconds, and his expression changed. He immediately got up to leave.
At the same time, Louis‘ phone rang. The caller was from the police station. Thankfully, they’d met before, and the officer on the other end was polite.
“Hello, Mr. Graham? Your wife’s run into a bit of a situation–she’s at the police station right now. Could you come down?”
“I’m on my way.”
Louis‘ face darkened. He hadn’t even asked what had happened yet, but watching Waylon rush off in a panic, a strange coincidence came to mind.
“Where are you headed?”
Waylon’s face was grim. “The police station.”
Louis said, “…I’ll come too.”
Kendrick looked at the two of them like they were aliens. “No way. Are you two seriously coordinating a visit to the police station? Louis, Waylon–what did you do? Commit a crime together and finally get caught?”
Louis didn’t have time for him. “Go find Baylon. He’s been in a foul mood lately. Waylon and I have things to handle. We’ll talk later.”
