“Oh? Did something happen between Ms. Stone and Mr. Graham?” Aria asked with feigned surprise.
“Who can really say what’ll happen down the road? Relationships are tricky–hard to predict, hard to explain.” Freya chuckled and left it at that. Aria laughed along, but she was already forming her own thoughts.
Aria smoothly shifted the topic. First they talked about clothes, then makeup. She quickly realized Freya didn’t know much about either. So she pivoted to work, and only then learned that Freya was actually a novelist. The two of them chatted about that for quite a while–until Louis returned.
“Mr. Graham.” Aria greeted Louis with a sweet smile.
Louis gave a slight nod but didn’t engage with her. He only looked at Freya and asked, “Want to head out now?”
“Now? Sure.” Freya had been itching to leave. Her ankle still ached, and her whole body felt a bit chilled. She’d had a few sweets earlier, but what she really wanted now was a warm bowl of porridge to settle her stomach.
“Mr. Graham, the banquet hasn’t even officially started yet. My parents put together quite a spread for tonight. Won’t you and Ms. Stone stay and try a little before you go?” Aria smiled as she spoke.
“You say that like there’s anything in this world Louis hasn’t already tasted,” Baylon chimed in, walking up beside Louis and catching Aria’s words midair.
Aria’s expression twitched for a second, but she recovered quickly. “Of course, Mr. Graham must’ve seen it all. I only meant it in good faith. It wouldn’t look good on us if you came all this way and left without even a bite.”
“Ms. Aria, you’ve been very thoughtful. You’ve all been great hosts. But we’d really like to head out early, so we’ll take our leave now.”

Freya was a little tempted to stay for the food, but one glance around at the wouldn’t be a relaxing meal. Even if she stayed, she wouldn’t enjoy it. She gave up the idea of squeezing in for a taste. If she embarrassed herself mid–bite, it wouldn’t be worth it.
Right in front of everyone, Louis reached for Freya’s hand. He gave the others a nod and said, “Let’s go.”

Waylon, Baylon, and Kendrick followed closely behind.

As soon as they left, heads turned all around the hall. Some nosy guests even rushed over to ask why they were leaving so carly. A few shameless ones tried to talk them into staying, only to be brushed off with subtle jabs from Baylon and Kendrick. That finally quieted the room.
In the parking lot, Kendrick stretched his arms with a yawn. “They were bound to start clinging once the banquet got going. Better to dip out now than get stuck in endless smali talk. These people seriously lack awareness. No wonder their businesses are floundering.”
Waylon smacked him on the back.
“Could you not? Not everyone was born into wealth and had Louis to mentor them. You know how many people across the country would kill to place their kids by Louis‘ side? Stop sneering.”
Baylon looked genuinely shocked. “Wait, are you saying you don’t sneer at them?”
Waylon answered solemnly, “Of course, I do. But as a sincere and kind man, I keep my judgment to myself. Gotta let people save face.”
Kendrick sputtered.
Baylon stepped back and turned to Louis. “Louis, seriously. If you don’t reel in Waylon soon, he’s gonna think he can walk on clouds.”
Louis walked alongside Freya and replied coolly, “Why not? Shoulder to shoulder with the sun.”
Freya stifled a laugh. Louis always seemed different when he was with these ridiculous brothers of his. His comebacks were sharper, his words more cutting than usual.
Waylon and the others piled into their car. Freya climbed into Louis‘ vehicle as well. Derek had just gotten the message and pulled up to pick them up. As soon as the doors closed, he started driving without asking a single question,
“Head to Guangyuan Porridge House. Turn on the heat in the car,” Louis said from the backseat.
Derek didn’t ask anything. He simply turned the wheel and took a new route. Freya muttered silently. So he’s cold and hungry too, huh?
She’d watched him back in the hall, calm and composed, chatting away like he had all the time in the world. So much for unbothered grace.

At the restaurant, the pork congee came out along with a spread of side dishes. Freya didn’t stand on ceremony. She grabbed her fork and started digging in. After wolfing down several side dishes and a few spoonfuls of congee, she looked up–and saw Louis eating his food like it was a delicacy.
She had two bites for every one of his, and even then, half of his food just sat there untouched.
That’s the difference between big shots and regular people. Even now, he was still keeping up image.

But we were the only ones there, was it really necessary to act that refined? Freya shook her head and went back to her meal.
