Tm making dumplings for lunch. I’ll also cook some flatbreads so we won’t have to worry about not being full.” Freya said casually
Making flatbreads and wrapping dumplings weren’t skills that just any girl who could cook basic home meals possessed. Louis suspicions surfaced again, but the moment he saw Freya sitting there, quietly and skillfully wrapping dumplings, bathed in the soft sunlight filtering through the sheer white curtains, he hesitated. The entire scene had a peaceful, almost dreamlike quality like something out of a serene, timeless painting. It made him feel there was no need to overthink things.
Hmm.. now that I think about it. I haven’t had these in a long time,” Louis said, almost unconsciously. A second later, realizing how out of place his comment was, he clamped his mouth shut, hung up his coat, and headed toward the bathroom to wash his hands, as if trying to cover up his slip.
However, Freya didn’t catch his odd behaviour at all. She also liked dumplings, and considering how busy Louis had been with work, he probably hadn’t paid much attention to what he ate. Besides, dumplings were just a simple snack, it was perfectly normal not to have had them in a while.
“Do you want extra, then? If you’re in the mood, I can cook more. If not, I’ll just make a smaller portion and freeze the rest. That way, if we ever don’t feel like cooking, we can just take them out and boil.”
“Make extra.” Louis replied as he walked out of the bathroom.
It had been years since he last had simple snacks. The last time was probably three or four years ago. If Freya hadn’t brought it up, he wouldn’t even have realized how long it had been since he’d taken the time to enjoy something simple.
*OK. I’ll cook a bit more then.” Freya said as she continued wrapping dumplings without pausing. To her, life was full of small joys and hope. Every day was what she made of it, and getting a second chance at life was already a stroke of luck. Every gift that life offered should be cherished. And right now, simply sitting here, wrapping dumplings and enjoying a warm meal was happiness.
An hour later, two steaming bowls of dumplings were served. Louis came out when Freya called him and was greeted by the sight of two bowls filed dumplings garnished with fresh cilantro and dried shrimp. The dumplings were plump and delicate, instantly appetizing at first glance. Alongside them was a plate of thin flatbreads and several small side dishes.
Freya had already taken her seat. She tilted her head slightly, motioning for him to sit, a small, expectant smile on her face.
Try it think I did a pretty good job. I don’t know how much your usually eat, but dumplings aren’t exactly filling, so I made some fatbreads too. By the way, do you know how to eat flatbreads?”
Louis almost laughed but kept it to himself. “Of course I do, I’m a normal person.”
He sat down and picked up a dumpling, tasting it carefully before giving his verdict. “It’s good.”
Freya grinned. “See, I know my dumplings were great. Well, mostly because I love eating them. Since you like them too, eat as much as you want.”
They ate at different paces, Louis ate nearly twice as much as Freya, yet they finished at almost the same time. Just as Freya stood up to take the dishes to the sink, Louis suddenly spoke.
TI buy a dishwasher.”
Freya, holding the plates, froze for a moment before quickly shaking her head. “No need, no need. It’s just a few dishes, It only takes three to five minutes to wash them. There’s no need to waste money on that.”
