Chapter 241 When a Ghost Farts and Dies
Mateo racked his brain but still couldn’t understand. Why had those creatures acted so human in the Bear Garden, yet once brought to the mortal world, become as dumb as livestock?
One day, his son returned home from school, and Mateo, lying weakly on his sickbed, asked what the teacher had taught that day.
His son replied, “The teacher told us a story about how something sweet down south can turn sour up north–it’s all about the soil you’re planted in.”
Same tree, different soil.
That one sentence struck Mateo like a lightning bolt. His mind buzzed; a cold chill ran through his body. He murmured, “Southern oranges… northern trifoliates… southern oranges… northern trifoliates….” Then suddenly, he coughed up a mouthful of dark blood and died on the spot.
That very day, the two caged bear cubs escaped without a trace.
His widow remarried. She had planned to burn “The Hundredfold Maul“, but a passing country gentleman happened to see it. The more he looked, the more he loved it. He asked how much she wanted for it. Furious and bitter, she blurted out, “A thousand silver taels!“– never expecting the man to agree.
Later, someone curious enough counted the bears in the painting. Not one more, not one less–exactly one hundred.
When Louis finished the story, Freya sat in silence for a moment. “You didn’t just look up some story and read it out loud, did you?”
Louis‘ tone was calm. “Well, have you heard it before?”
Freya was honest. “Nope, never.”
But wasn’t telling a girl a story supposed to be something sweet or funny? Why was this guy telling me a creepy supernatural tale instead? Then again, maybe she couldn’t blame Louis too much. His date mother–in–law had loved these kinds of ghost stories.
For the sake of his pride, Freya forced herself to offer some praise. “You read it so dramatically–it was really well done.”

well how he’d read it–but as his father once said. If someone’s willing to make a fool of themselves just to amuse you, without wanting anything in return, isn’t that something to be happy about?
“How about I tell you a story now? This one starts off kind of spooky, gets a little funny in the middle, and ends a bit sad.”
Louis was actually intrigued. “What story?”
“Once upon a time, there was a ghost…” Freya lowered her voice on purpose, making it sound ceric. Then she suddenly changed tone, “One day, he let out a fart.
She switched to a tragic tone. “And in the end…. he died.”
Louis went quiet.
“Haha, did you get it? It’s a bad joke,” Freya finally burst out laughing.
Listening to her joyful laugh on the phone, Louis smiled too. “It was funny. Writers really do know how to tell stories.”
If Kendrick had been there, he probably would’ve rolled his eyes. Louis was so patient and warm with Freya–even tossing out subtle compliments. Kendrick had never seen him act this way
with anyone else.
The time off. He hadn’t even That morning, Kendrick had barely managed to beg Louis for made it out the door in his car to enjoy it before Louis called and asked him to look up some background info.
His precious day off got hijacked just like that. He’d wanted to argue–but Louis had threatened him, so he had no choice but to buckle down and do the work. He used to think watching someone else’s romance was no big deal. But now? So what if you’re in love? Got a girlfriend? Big deal!
“I’m kind of embarrassed,” Freya said. “I don’t know how to tell stories. I only know how to write them.”
“That’s just as good,” Louis replied. “Have any of your novels been adapted before?” He figured she must’ve had some success already.
“Sort of. One of them got adapted, and I even did the screenplay. But compare Writer Hai, I’ve still got a long way to go–so I need to keep learning.”

The worst part was, the story had already ended. Even if she did tell him, it probably wouldn’t make much of a difference. That’s what made her so conflicted.
After hesitating for a bit, Freya finally decided to say something. “There’s something I want to tell you.”
What is it?” Louis, catching the careful and serious tone in her voice, instinctively sat up
straighter.
“What if I told you….” Freya spoke cautiously. “That the world we live in is actually part of a novel? Like, what if our lives were inside a book–do you think that’s possible?”
“Why wouldn’t it be?” Louis leaned back, relaxing into the seat.
“No one really knows what the world really is. For all we know, we could be stuck in someone else’s dream–or a story someone made up in their sleep. Who’s to say any of this is real? It’s all up in the air. Ever heard the saying about not knowing whether you’re dreaming or awake?”
