Chapter 259 She Fights Thugs and I Caught Feelings
“Those slippers were my grandma’s,” Waylon explained. “It’s late, so I’ll buy a new pair
tomorrow.”
“Mm.” Still just one word, no emotion.
“Don’t just stand there. Come in and help clean up! I’ll whip up something to eat–what do you want for a late–night snack? Grilled cheese, buffalo wings, loaded nachos… or maybe some mac and cheese or a bowl of chicken noodle soup? Jasmine, what sounds good to you?”
Waylon blurted out instinctively, “Why so much kidney stuff?”
“I’m good with anything.” Jasmine shook her head, then asked politely, “Is Mathilda nourishing her kidneys?”
“I’m way too old to be doing that–it’s for Waylon! He never takes care of himself. If he doesn’t start now, what’s he gonna do when he’s old?” Mathilda gave Waylon a glance and sighed with concern.
Waylon froze. He shot a quick look at Jasmine beside him, then forced a smile.
“I just got a full physical from Third Brother’s clinic a few days ago–perfectly healthy. Not need to go out of your way for me.”
“That won’t do. I came here to take care of you two. A bunch of guys living together never bother with this kind of thing. Quinton’s kidneys probably aren’t even in great shape. While I’m here, I’m making sure you get the right nourishment–otherwise, you won’t have the chance later.” Mathilda took a kidney out of the grocery bag, tossed it into a stainless steel basin, turned on the faucet, and added, “Andres gave me specific instructions.”
“Really, it’s fine. Eating that stuff late at night just makes you overheated, doesn’t it?” Waylon tried to resist.
“No worries, just drink some tea before bed. Lbrought some. It’s blood chrysanthemum, special–ordered from a friend,” Mathilda said, waving her wet hands.
Waylon muttered, “You came prepared.”
“Of course.” Mathilda shot hind a smug look before turning back to the ingredients, already deep in prep mode.

kitchen threshold, his body falling backward. Jasmine, equally startled, caught him with lightning reflexes.
Waylon gave a little shiver. Jasmine withdrew her hand from his waist, and once he found his footing again, he asked tightly,
“Why were you standing behind me?”
Jasmine’s expression didn’t change. “You haven’t told me where I’m staying.”
“Oh.” It was the middle of summer, and Waylon could still feel the warmth where her hand
Fiere had been on his waist. He awkwardly stepped past her and raised his voice, “You’ll stay This room’s not only cozy but has a bay window too. If you get tired from studying, you cart sip tea and enjoy the view or whatever.”
Jasmine followed him into the room. It was just like he said–warmly decorated, with a bay window. It wasn’t particularly spacious, but the view from the window was nice, perfect for resting your eyes after reading.
“Alright. Thank you.” Jasmine wasn’t picky; having a place to stay was enough.
That sudden “thank you” caught Waylon off guard. He felt a little guilty. Truth was, he’d given Mathilda the south–facing room, which was bigger than this one. But then again, he’d done plenty of worse things in his life.
“No need to thank me.”
“Well then, go ahead and settle in. Let me know if you need anything.” Waylon gave the usual polite send–off and left the room, leaving Jasmine behind.
That one night marked the beginning of fate–and also the start of Waylon’s downward spiral.
After a few days of Jasmine living there, Waylon realized not only had he not gained an affectionate girl fawning over him, but aside from mealtimes, she was barely ever around.
Funny thing about people–when someone ignores you, you start to get curious.
Waylon finally asked Mathilda about it and learned that Jasmine really wasn’t some matchmaking setup from Grandpa. In fact, Andres had even called him specifically to remind him–multiple times–not to get any funny ideas

That didn’t sit right with Waylon. Sure, Andres had always been critical of him, but deep down, he’d always been proud of his grandson. And now, the first time he was truly disappointed

in me, and it was because of a girl. That didn’t make sense.
Then he started noticing just how unusual Jasmine was. She often went out at night, always carrying a big black backpack. And she kept avoiding him.
Waylon thought back to how he’d misjudged and offended her before. Since she clearly didn’t have those kinds of intentions, he figured he ought to treat her with a little more respect. So he made a point to apologize and tried to patch things up.
He wasn’t some overly righteous nice guy, but still–out of respect for his grandfather, he didn’t want to be hostile. And that’s when Waylon realized. he was getting more and more curious about Jasmine.
She knew all kinds of things. When Mathilda wasn’t around, her cooking was surprisingly good. Her life was both simple and complicated. Once, he asked why she didn’t watch dramas, and she simply said, “Because they always get everything wrong.”
