Some of the women who had backed away earlier started giving Freya meaningful glances, signaling for her to come over and chat. But after a moment of hesitation, she stayed put. The memories of the original owner weren’t exactly reliable anymore. In high society, who knew what kind of impact a shift in status could bring?
Besides, those women had only associated with the original owner because she was technically Louis‘ wife. Now that Louis himself was struggling, there was no way they would still treat her the same. If they were at least somewhat decent, they might ask a few polite questions. But if they were the petty type, they were probably just waiting for her to walk over so they could show off their superiority. She wasn’t stupid enough to walk into that trap.
“You’re not going over?” Louis‘ sudden voice startled her.
Freya shook her head immediately. Are you kidding? Why would I drag myself in such a trouble? “No need. We were never actually friends. It was all just surface–level politeness. Now that things have changed, it’s best to keep our distance.”
Louis glanced at her, surprised that his so–called wife wasn’t as foolish as before. He couldn’t understand why she used to waste time with those insignificant people. But since she had no intention of going over, he wasn’t about to insist.
They hadn’t walked far before two young men approached, each with a woman clinging to their arms. The one walking slightly ahead looked to be in his early thirties. He had a polite smile on his face, but it felt incredibly insincere.
“Well, if it isn’t Mr. Graham. Long time no see! And who is this lovely lady? Oh, silly me, my memory must be getting worse. with age. This must be Mrs. Graham, right?” He chuckled, his tone filled with mockery. “What a rare sight, seeing the two of you together. Could it be that times are tough? I’ve heard rumors that your marriage wasn’t doing too well, but from the looks of it, people must have been exaggerating. Mrs. Graham is quite beautiful, after all.”
At first, Freya didn’t think much of his words, but years of writing had sharpened her instincts. She quickly caught on to the underlying meaning. And when she noticed the way his disgusting gaze lingered on her, she felt her skin crawl. She had the sudden urge to dig his eyes out.
Louis‘ expression turned cold. “It’s been a while, Mr. Kent. I almost thought you were too ill to get up again. But I see you’re still standing. Smart people know to avoid the same pitfall twice. Those who aren’t so smart, however, refuse to accept failure until it buries them. Wouldn’t you agree, Mr. Kent?”
Kent’s expression darkened for a split second before he forced another fake smile. “You’re absolutely right. However, some things that were once pitfalls are now hidden treasures waiting to be picked up. And when people see treasure, naturally, they all want a piece of it. I’m sure you understand what I mean, Mr. Graham.”
As he spoke, he glanced at Freya, the implication in his eyes disgustingly obvious.
Freya instinctively tightened her grip on Louis‘ arm. What the heck? This man is revolting! I want to punch him so badly!
She knew Louis wasn’t the kind of person who would trade his wife for power, but just hearing someone suggest it made her stomach churn.
“People tend to assume others are just like them. Perhaps it’s because their worldview is too small,” Louis said calmly, patting Freya’s hand in a reassuring gesture.
His touch was light, but it was enough to ease the anger bubbling inside her.
