Freya still hadn’t placed who these people were, but their messages painted a clear enough picture–these were definitely the original body owner’s fair–weather friends from her old social circle.

The way they talked about worrying” over me and “not being able to reach me was laughable. Back when Louis‘ business hit rock bottom, their so–called concern had been laced with barely veiled schadenfreude. If not for their backhanded comments, the original owner might not have spiraled so badly.
And now they claimed to have brought gifts and gathered intel for me? Please. The original owner had begged them for help, only to be told to “accept her fate” and stop “making a scene.” They’d all taken turns smugly comparing their own comfortable lives to her ruined “Cinderella story,” not–so–subtly mocking Louis in the process.
This sudden act of concern wouldn’t fool anyone–not even the original owner, naive as I’d been.
Back then, the original body owner tolerated these hangers–on because no one else in high society would give her the time of day. But I had zero interest in playing trophy wife. I’m with Louis because I love him, not for some social ladder. If Louis needed networking. I’d treat it like a job. Otherwise? I’d rather spend that time writing. These pointless ego–stroking sessions weren’t worth a minute of my life.

“Freya, why do you look like you just smelled something rotten?” Aiden eyed her unusually sarcastic expression.
“Nothing important. Just some… uninteresting people.” She set her phone aside. “Want a midnight snack?”
“No thanks. Uncle says late–night eating ruins your health–and I need to grow up handsome.” Aiden shook his head firmly, then reconsidered. “You can have a little if you’re hungry, though.”
After a pause, he added, “Uncle once told me everyone has uses–you just have to figure out how to use them. Even annoying people might be good for something. Since we don’t need them, maybe you can make them work for you instead?”
Freya tilted her head.
Maybe a resource allocation strategy? Not my usual approach, but worth considering.
“Noted. Thanks, kiddo. I’ll pass on snacks too–just checking if you are hungry.”
Aiden shrugged. “Not hungry. Uncle only ever let me have fruit after dinner–no snacks.”
Life now is so much freer than back at the Graham estate. There, every meal had been strictly regimented. At least with Freya around, I can occasionally sneak treats. To me, this is pure bliss.
