“Stop!” Freya raised her voice,
The two women froze mid–sentence.
Aiden had already had enough. These women had crowded around Freya so much that he’d been pushed a whole person’s width away. And arguing in a setting like this? Embarrassing Even as a kid, he could tell how awkward it was.
So the moment Freya cut them off, Aiden jumped in, clearly annoyed.
“Freya, I want to go find Uncle Louis. Take me to him, please.”
Freya had actually been thinking of excusing herself to go to the bathroom, but Aiden’s. request gave her the perfect exit. She immediately followed his lead.
“Sorry, everyone. Aiden wants to find his uncle. I’ll walk him over. You all go ahead and chat. Let’s catch up another time.”
Without waiting for a response, she stood up and left with Aiden.
Once they were a good distance away, Aiden couldn’t hold back his complaints.
“Those women are so annoying. It’s one thing to be dumb, but do they have to put it on display and drag other people down with them? Freya, you really should be a little harsher with people like that. If you let this go on, they’ll only drag down your standards.”
Exactly. She’d come to this event perfectly fine, only to be caught up in someone else’s stupidity–completely unprovoked. Not only were their intentions blatantly obvious, they couldn’t even wait a little while or act subtle about it. Arguing in public like that? No wonder they’d never made it into the real elite.
“Don’t worry. I didn’t tolerate them, did I? I bet now that we’ve left, the rest of them are tearing those two apart.”
Just thinking about it made Freya laugh.
And sure enough, that’s exactly what was happening.
As soon as Freya and Aiden were gone, the other women who’d been sitting farther away started laying into the pair who’d been arguing.

“What were you two thinking? Arguing in front of Freya? It’s like you wanted to make thin awkward. Now look–she’s gone. Whatever hopes you had, you can forget them.
“Seriously. Couldn’t you at least reminisce a little? Rebuild some rapport? You think Freyas still the same person she used to be? She didn’t even look back at us when she left. Now what? You happy?”
“When have either of you ever had a shred of tact? I didn’t want to call you out in front of everyone, but thanks to you, none of us have any face left. She’d only been here five minutes and you drove her off. How are we supposed to claim we’re close to her now?”
The woman in blue refused to back down. “We didn’t say anything wrong. What exactly did I say that was so bad? It’s not our fault Freya’s changed–she’s rich now, she’s outgrown us. What does that have to do with us?”
The woman in pink looked upset, about to say something–but held it back.
“Whatever. I didn’t know she’d changed so much. Next time I’ll be more careful when I talk to her.”
Not that it would help. Freya was gone.
The rest of the group had no choice but to accept it. Each of them quietly started plotting ways to talk to Freya again later in the evening.
Meanwhile, Freya walked a few steps, then suddenly mumbled, “Weird.”
“Weird how?” Aiden clung to her hand, tilting his head curiously.
“It’s nothing,” Freya replied, shaking her head.
She’d just realized something–something about Susan, the former ringleader of that group. She’d been completely silent lately. Now that she thought about it, ever since that one meeting where Freya had tricked her out of a significant sum of money, Susan had completely vanished.
Susan had made her intentions pretty clear at the time. It was supposed to be a long game- bait and wait. So why had she dropped off the radar entirely?
Then there was Clement–the guy who tried to pester her–and Victoria, who had come right to her door to demand she divorce Louis. All of them had only shown up once… then disappeared.
None of them were the type to give up that easily. If anything, people like that usually got even bolder.

Aiden was bursting with curiosity and kept tugging her hand for an explanation. Freya couldn’t resist his
pleading, so she briefly explained what was bothering her.
“Oh, that? Easy,” Aiden said with a pout. “Uncle Louis probably took care of it. Duh.
“Your uncle handled it?” Freya blinked, skeptical. “I doubt it. Back then, we didn’t really have a relationship. Why would he go out of his way to deal with his own suitors just for me?”
