“Yeah, we don’t have anywhere else to go. At least over there we can sit down and relax.” Freya said, equally bored.
“Then let’s go play! The Wright family always sets up something fun at these events. Come on, don’t just stand around zoning out.” Kendrick waved them forward. Baylon chimed in enthusiastically, and even though Aiden knew the two of them were absolute trolls, the temptation was too strong to resist.
They led Freya to a side hall–not as large as the main one, but definitely livelier. The organizers had actually thought to create a game area in this corner, which was surprisingly thoughtful.
“So, what do you want to play? How about cards?” Kendrick suggested. “Poker never gets old. Or, hey, maybe we could try-”
“I want to play with the blocks,” Aiden interrupted, eyeing a corner stacked with beautifully crafted building blocks. They were bright and polished–irresistible to a kid.
“And you
still say you’re not a little brat,” Baylon teased, jumping on the opportunity to poke fun. “Still playing with blocks at your age?”
Aiden rolled his eyes. “Please. A genius like me doesn’t play blocks like everyone else. Forget it–you wouldn’t get it. Not worth explaining. Freya, I’m heading over there. You guys go play.”
And off he ran. There were enough blocks to keep him entertained for a good while.
“Come on, Freya, let’s play cards,” Kendrick said, rubbing his hands together with a gleam in his eye. He didn’t forget to shoot a meaningful glance at Baylon.
Baylon caught it and returned one of his own. Louis was the type who never played unless he intended to win, and win he always did. They’d been losing to him for ages. Now that Louis wasn’t around, and they had a chance to play with his wife, they weren’t going to waste it. They had to win at least once–redeem their dignity a little.
And hey, wasn’t there a saying? A husband and wife are one unit.” Beating Freya was basically like beating Louis,
Freya hesitated. “Isn’t that kind of unfair? What if I end up winning every round?”
Baylon and Kendrick exchanged glances. Baylon grinned. “No worries. A win’s a win. We’re

“Exactly! It’s all good,” Kendrick chimed in.
“Well, alright then. With that assurance, Freya felt more at ease.
The three of them sat down at a nearby table. People around them noticed, of course–but Kendrick was infamous for his bluntness and Baylon wasn’t someone you wanted to cross. He had a reputation for passive–aggressively sabotaging people who annoyed him. So no one dared approach, afraid they’d say the wrong thing and end up targeted.
Which meant the three of them got to enjoy themselves in peace. They started playing right away.
Five rounds in, Baylon was staring blankly at the growing pile of marbles in front of Freya.
“Freya, can I be the dealer this round?” he asked, a little dazed.
“Huh? Oh, sure, go ahead.” Freya held back the urge to claim the dealer role and graciously passed it up.
But by the end of the round, her pile had grown again.
Kendrick couldn’t take it anymore. “Freya, how are your cards always this good? This makes no sense!”
“Maybe it’s just luck?” Freya said modestly.
The two men frowned and kept playing. Three rounds later, neither had won a single hand. Baylon slammed his cards down.
“Freya, something’s off. Did Louis teach you how to play?”
“Nope. I didn’t even know he could play cards,” Freya answered honestly.
She didn’t look like she was lying. Kendrick and Baylon looked at each other, still unconvinced.
Kendrick couldn’t let it go. Even with good luck, there was no way someone could win every single time. It was just ridiculous.
They’d originally wanted to beat Freya a few times–get some psychological victory over Louis. But they were losing worse than ever. Even Louis wouldn’t beat them this consistently -he’d let them win one or two rounds at least.

Baylon hesitated. “Freya, that thing you said carlier–was it because you’ve got, like… a thing?”
Freya blinked. “What thing?”
“Like. I dunno. Maybe you always win at games? Or cards? Some kind of luck aura or something?” Even as he said it, Baylon felt kind of stupid.
“No way. There’s no such thing as a ‘buff like that,” Freya said, nearly laughing.
Kendrick sighed in exasperation. “Baylon, you’ve clearly been poisoned by Waylon lately. You’re starting to sound like one of his fantasy novels. Have you forgotten what Confucius said? The Master does not speak of ghosts or the supernatural.”
Baylon defended himself seriously. “Then how do you explain Freya’s cards being this good every time? It’s not normal!”
