Noah was about to speak, but Kendrick cut him off impatiently. “What, are you two just gonna stand here until I personally invite you to leave? Do I look like Louis, with that much patience?”
The two men didn’t say another word. They nodded quickly and turned to leave. Their female companions, curious about Kendrick, tried to sneak a glance at him, but they were immediately scolded and dragged away.
“Louis, seriously? If you had to come, fine, but why bring her? And if you did, at least give me a heads–up. Those two idiots actually had the nerve to show up in front of you, and you just let it slide? You’re way too easygoing.”
“It’s nothing. Just a couple of clowns.” Louis‘ tone remained calm. “But you–why are you even here? You usually avoid these events. What changed this time?”
Louis‘ demeanor was noticeably softer when talking to Kendrick, even carrying a hint of amusement.
Kendrick pouted, his voice carrying a rare hint of complaint. “I was worried you’d run into some troublemakers, so I had my manager cancel an event for me. Good thing I came–who knows what nonsense those two would’ve spouted otherwise?”
After speaking, he turned his head and glanced at Freya, his gaze sweeping over her from head to toe in open scrutiny.
Freya glanced down at herself. Nothing wrong with my outfit.
She touched her hair. Not messy. Confused, she looked back up–just in time to catch Kendrick’s evaluating gaze, which quickly turned into one of mild disdain.
Kendrick narrowed his eyes at her. “Considering you at least had the sense to stand up for Louis today, I won’t say much. But let me be clear–given Louis‘ current situation, if you’re hoping to squeeze money out of him, you’re out of luck. So drop the act and walk away while you still can.”
Freya’s smile stiffened. If this were anyone else, I could talk back. But this is Louis‘ close friend. He’s standing up for him—what can I even say? Besides, given the original owner’s behavior, it was understandable that people would be suspicious.
“Don’t talk nonsense. We’re still married,” Louis cut in, stopping Kendrick from saying more. He didn’t explain further, though–just gave a simple instruction. “Come on, let’s go sit over there.”
Kendrick rolled his eyes. “Fine, I’ll come with you.”
With Kendrick’s arrival, Louis had to put aside whatever he had originally planned. Among his group of friends, Kendrick was the youngest and the most straightforward. Unlike the others, who were more strategic and forward–thinking, Kendrick was impulsive and acted on instinct.
That was precisely why, while the rest of their friends had chosen to stay away tonight, Kendrick had rushed over–purely out of concern that Louis might run into trouble.
Because of his youth, the others tended to indulge him. He had no qualms about wearing his emotions on his sleeve. And, given his background, few dared to cross him.
At an event like this, the only ones bold enough to provoke Louis were clueless fools like the ones from earlier. Everyone else, no matter how foolish, knew better. Even if Louis was currently in a difficult position, that didn’t mean he wouldn’t rise again.
As the saying goes, there’s still meat on the bone.
And Louis, who had spent years controlling the Graham family with an iron grip, ensuring that no one in his own clan could even challenge him–how could anyone believe he’d be so easily brought down?
