“We’re definitely not the type to blur the line between work and play,” John said earnestly, trying to clear his name. “Playing with you helps us test more accurately. If anything goes wrong, we can record and fix it right away.”
Louis gave a quiet cough. The two immediately straightened up, grinning as they followed behind Freya, making it clear they were absolutely going to escort her through the experience.
Louis didn’t stop them. In fact, he seemed perfectly comfortable leaving Freya in their hands, though he did remind them not to forget about her feelings.
The two looked like they were about to swear an oath. Freya couldn’t help feeling a little helpless–Louis really was treating her like a kid.
But that didn’t matter. Louis had work to take care of, so Freya lay down in the gaming pod and began her virtual adventure.
She’d been playing off and on lately. It had just been a few days since she last logged in. Louis
didn’t play often, but when he got home early, he’d sometimes join her for a bit. Still, in Louis’s view, games weren’t exactly high–value, so if he could distract her with something else, he’d usually avoid gaming altogether. Freya had gotten used to that.
By now, she was a veteran. Even though she was part of an outer faction, she’d barely been in the game five minutes when Micky and John’s friend requests popped up.
As soon as she accepted, they sent a party invite and popped up right in front of her.
Freya looked at the two of them and fell into a stunned silence. In real life, Micky was skinny and John was chubby. In the game, their avatars were completely reversed. For a second, she couldn’t even tell who was who.
“Are you guys other’s name.
mocking each other?” she asked the two players who were clearly wearing the
“No no no, you’ve got it all wrong. We’re just living out an alternate life in the game,” Micky explained. “I can eat anything and not gain weight, and John gains weight from drinking water. So now we’re switching it up. Isn’t that kind of awesome?”
Okay… that actually made some sense.

“So, what are we doing next?”
“Come on. We’re taking you somewhere cool,” Micky said, sounding all mysterious.
Freya thought it was interesting. Micky said this was a test, but they weren’t using a test. server. They were in the regular server she usually played on. The only difference was that it looked like they could access areas other players couldn’t.
Freya’s character was tricked out with in–game purchases. She had tons of fashion skins, all paid for with Louis’s money, though even if she had to earn them herself, she would’ve done. the same. She didn’t expect special privileges. The only “perk” was that Louis orice offered to have a custom exclusive item designed for her if she wanted.
Freya did like pretty gear, but she wasn’t that obsessed. She didn’t need something that over- the–top. Still, if it was in the store, she’d probably bought it.
She didn’t have a ton of time to play, so she mostly focused on doing quests and admiring in- game scenery. Occasionally, she’d run a dungeon or two–nothing more.
“What exactly do you want me to test? Let me just say this up front: I’m not into PvP. If you want me to fight people, I’m totally useless.”
“Pift. We’re not that dumb. Skills are balanced now–why would we torment ourselves by messing with that?” John said as he brought her to a teleport point. “We want you to check something else out.”
He, looking very slim in–game, led Freya to the portal and told her to select the new option at the very bottom.
Freya didn’t think much of it and tapped it without looking. In an instant, dazzling lights filled her vision. In less than three seconds, she was teleported somewhere completely new.
She turned around to see Micky and John right behind her, just staring
at her.
“Why are you two staring at me?” Freya asked, confused.
“Take a look around,” John said, scratching his head. “Besides, weren’t you staring at us first?” Freya turned back toward the view in front of her.
She was standing in the middle of a bustling street, packed with NPCs coming and going. The female characte all seemed more elaborately dressed than the ones in the main world- flashy reds and greens, flowing sheer fabrics, lots of revealing outfits. In short, they w more… seductive.

The buildings lining the street looked totally different from the ones she’d seen elsewhere. Most were brightly lit, with red lanterns glowing in the doorways. The whole street seemed to be bathed in red light.
Something felt… off.
Freya took a step forward. “Where is this? Why does it feel so weird?”
