Feeling like she’d come down a little too hard, Freya softened her voice. “I know you’re trying to protect me, and I really do appreciate it. But even if something ever does happen, I don’t want you going after people the wrong way. Revenge might seem clever, but it never really lasts. You’re better than that. If someone comes at you, you face them head–on–with integrity and strength. That’s what really matters, okay?”
On the other end of the line, Aiden let out an exaggerated sigh. “I know. I was just being dramatic. I’m not actually going to do anything crazy.”
Freya smiled and eased into a gentler tone. “See? That’s the Aiden I know–smart and sweet.”
“Of course I am. I’m the best!” He said proudly “Alright, if you’re okay, I’ve got to go. I’ve got class soon. But if Uncle Louis doesn’t come through, you let me know, okay?”
“I will. Go focus on school, bud.”
After the call, Freya found herself wondering–why would Aiden doubt Louis now? He used to look up to him like a hero. So what had changed?
Then it hit her. Maybe it was because, in the past, Louis never really cared about the old version of Freya. Maybe Aiden had noticed that, and deep down, he didn’t fully trust that Louis would show up when it really mattered.
The thought tugged at her heart a little. It made her feel even closer to Aiden, more protective of him. She quietly decided she’d take even better care of that kid from now on.
Around noon, she noticed the house smelled incredible. The chef had clearly gone all out- way more food than usual. She was still wondering what was going on when she heard the front door open.

Louis gently ruffled her hair, then tapped her nose with a grin. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay. That’s all.”
Freya melted again and hugged him even tighter. “I’m so lucky to have you.”
He wrapped his arms around her and whispered back, “I’m the lucky one.”
Before, making money was just that–making money. Work was something to fill the time. Every day felt the same. Nothing exciting, nothing heartbreaking, nothing worth looking forward to. Just one day after another.
But now with her–everything had changed. She made the world feel real. His emotions weren’t just his anymore. When something upset her, he felt it too. When she hurt, he burned with it. What he hadn’t told her was just how much she meant to him.
When he saw people attacking her online today, for a moment, all he wanted was to shut them down–completely. But the second her message came through, the anger started to fade. She didn’t even realize the kind of pull she had on him.
He’d taken care of the bare essentials, then pushed the rest aside. Just the thought of her being upset was enough to make him drop everything and come straight home.
Nothing mattered more than her.
Freya looked over at the table, then back at him. “No wonder the chef made so much food. You must be starving after a full morning. Go get cleaned up, then let’s eat. Are you going to rest a little before heading back out?” Freya held onto Louis’s hand, not wanting to let go.
Louis glanced at her, amused. She was clinging to his hand like she wasn’t letting go anytime soon. “Yeah, I’ll take a quick break. Can’t leave when you’re being this sweet.”
