“Oh wow, who’s this? Louis, I’m actually shocked–you know a woman besides Freya? That’s rare.” Kendrick took one look at Sophia and immediately filed her away as just another woman trying to cozy up to Louis. He had no qualms about joking.
“I don’t know her.” Louis’s voice was cold and distant.
Sophia’s smile froze. She forced herself to keep it together, squeezing out a polite grin. “Mr. Graham, you don’t remember me? We met on set once. I’m a friend of your wife, Freya”
Before she could say more, Kendrick cut in.
“Ah, now I remember. You’re that actress who tried to stir things up on Twitter–smearing Freya’s name. Tsk tsk, the acting might be average, but your PR game is top–notch. What, squeezed your way into Mr. Ruby’s birthday party today just to apologize in person? Having a sudden moral awakening?”
Sophia’s smile stiffened even more, but Kendrick wasn’t done. He turned to Louis.
“This is the one who tried to drag Freya online. Don’t listen to her nonsense about being a backstabbers ‘friend.‘ Nobody in showbiz makes friends without an agenda_especially i like her. Still, if she wants to apologize, we should at least give her the chance. Even if it’s half–hearted, it might help Freya blow off some steam, right?”
Kendrick knew Louis already had the full picture. He didn’t know why Louis didn’t want Sophia going near Freya, but he wasn’t about to let that stop him from stirring the pot. It wasn’t like an apology would cost anything–and frankly, this banquet was boring. A little drama would do everyone some good.
Sophia couldn’t say no. Even though every fiber of her being resisted, refusing wasn’t an option. All she could do was force another smile.
“Yes, that’s exactly why I’m here. I’ve been meaning to apologize to Freya. It’s all my agent’s fault–she posted things without clearing them with me, and poor Freya got dragged into the mess for no reason. She didn’t ask for any of it.”
Even while apologizing, Sophia made sure to pin the blame on Claire. There was no way she’d admit any of it was her own doing.
Kendrick neither believed her nor bothered to pretend he did. His grin was laced with

“Ms. Sophia really is a seasoned actress. Alright then–come on, Freya’s just over there.

“Isn’t that obvious? Judging by your performance in the VR game, I figured you’d be about the same here.” Freya quickly cleared the final level. The “Victory” screen flashed, and she finally looked up–only to see Sophia with Louis and the others.
“Sophia?” she asked, confused. “What’s going on?”
It was Baylon who answered, his tone exhausted. “Kendrick said Ms. Sophia wanted to apologize to you.”
Over something so minor? And now it was becoming a full production. If Kendrick weren’t his friend, Baylon might have tossed him out of the banquet already. Did he not notice how people were starting to glance their way?
“Apologize for what?” Freya asked, even more puzzled. She hadn’t connected the dots at all. But she did think it was strange for Sophia to show up at this kind of event.
