The only instruction Louis gave regarding her meeting with Susan was to keep the conversation casual and avoid sensitive topics–and to report back with anything she found out.
To be honest, this undercover kind of assignment was something Freya had only ever written into her own novels. Even in her past life, she never imagined she’d actually be doing it herself one day.”
Since Susan was the one who extended the invitation, she naturally picked the place. Freya told herself this was just a chance to enjoy a good meal–take advantage of the rich, so to speak. After all, she really didn’t know anything, and there was no way Susan would choose some roadside stall.
Sure enough, the place Susan picked was a well–known café in the city center. When Freya looked it up online the night before, she saw that even the cheapest drink was over two hundred.
Over two hundred for a cup of coffee? Are you kidding me? Freya had never been that extravagant in her life!
The day of the meeting, she made sure to dress herself up. Even if she was bound to be mocked afterward, at least she wouldn’t give them any excuse to say she looked sloppy.
Still, what she didn’t expect at all was for the very first thing Susan said to her… to be yet another jab.
“Freya, I know you’re upset. You’ve always been proud. But now that things have come to this, I’m sure your makeup collection isn’t what it used to be. You really don’t have to put on a show in front of me. Even if you came bare–faced, I wouldn’t look down on you.”
Ha. Freya just wanted to say–if she wasn’t better looking than Susan, she might’ve actually believed Susan meant well.
For someone to say something like that and still keep up the appearance of being concerned–it really took skill.
“You’re funny. No matter how hard life gets, a person should never stop appreciating beauty. Besides, I was born good- looking. Not putting on makeup would just be a waste. We only stay young for so long–why waste a single day? And with the kind of natural gifts I have, not keeping myself beautiful would be an insult to fate’s generosity.”
Since Susan had already handed her the knife, Freya wasn’t about to play nice. She drove it straight into her heart with precision.
Susan kept her smile on, barely suppressing the urge to strangle Freya, and pulled her along affectionately.
“Alright, alright, our Freya is the prettiest. Come on, I know you haven’t been feeling great lately. Let’s go have some tea and talk. I can’t do much, but I can listen. Let it all out–it’ll help you feel better
Led by the server into a private room with the best view, Freya couldn’t help but marvel. No wonder rich people love this place- it really is something else. Just the size of the courtyard alone could outshine any little teahouse. And the design? Absolutely master–level.
Susan saw Freya staring out at the courtyard and assumed she was reminiscing about her lost luxurious life. She sneered internally, though her tone stayed warm and gentle.
“Freya, what would you like to drink?”
Freya snapped back to attention, eyes lighting up instantly. She rattled off a list of names–all the signature drinks and treats she’d looked up online the night before. Susan’s face twitched in surprise for a second, but she quickly recovered.
“Freya, are you sure you can finish all that?”
Susan clearly thought Freya had thrown all shame out the window and was acting like someone who had never eaten before. But Freya didn’t bother hiding it in the slightest.
“If I can’t finish, I’ll just take it to go. No big deal.”
