Chapter 44 Ashamed
“Well, thanks a lot then,” Louis said, a trace of amusement in his voice.

“No need to thank me. You were pretty good to me in the past too,” Freya waved it off. “Oh right, I brought back some leftovers. They haven’t been touched. Want some?”
Although Louis had grown up in privileged conditions, he was never one to enjoy waste. Except for when business demanded displays of wealth, his meals at home had always been normal three–a–day fare–just cooked by someone with excellent skills.
And during school, he’d had takeout before too. “Sure.”
Freya hadn’t expected him to actually say yes. She thought Louis wouldn’t touch that kind of thing, so she stammered a bit. “Um, I just remembered–they’re all sweets. Is that okay?”
“What would be the problem?” Louis asked so matter–of–factly that Freya had no choice but to shuffle over to the door, retrieve the bag, and open it. Sure enough, it was full of desserts and pastries.
Louis
Louis naturally picked one up and popped it into his mouth. After chewing and swallowing, he gave his review: “This kind of thing is better hot.”
“You’ve had it before?” The fact that a big shot like him ate sweets at all was already surprising–let alone from this specific place.
Louis glanced at her and casually pulled out a napkin to wipe his hands. “My grandfather used to like it.”
Oh–Mr. Edward used to enjoy it. So the big shot probably bought it for him sometimes. Maybe Mr. Edward even got him to try it. Freya suddenly realized her actions might have brought up memories unintentionally, and she instantly felt awkward. “Sorry.”
The apology seemed a bit out of nowhere, but Louis quickly realized what she meant and shook his head.
“No need to apologize.”
The past had nothing to do with the person standing in front of him now, so there was no reason for her to say sorry. Even the woman from before had nothing to be sorry for. The only reason his grandfather had arranged their marriage was that, in his old age, he wanted to honor an old friend while also securing Louis a wife who was clean, beautiful, and without ambition or agenda. It was a win–win.
To say his grandfather had treated that woman exceptionally well wouldn’t be accurate–it was just mutual benefit. That’s why Louis had looked after her life and sent her money, but had never shown much personal attention.,
“Um… what do you want for dinner? I’ll make it.” Freya still felt a bit ashamed. The big shot had taken care of the cannon fodder in the past, and after she came into this body, he hadn’t made things difficult for her either. Yet here she was, poking his emotional wounds right after his business failure–too harsh.
“Anything’s fine. I’ve got something to take care of later, so I’ll be back a bit late.” Louis stood as he spoke.
So he’d been waiting for her this whole time? Freya jumped to her feet, suddenly feeling even guiltier. Even if there were no romantic feelings between them, they were at least roommates or friends. She really hadn’t been attentive enough.
“Okay, go do your thing. I’ll wait and have dinner with you.”
Louis glanced at her. He was about to say she didn’t have to wait, but seeing her guilty expression, he left it alone. If she wanted to wait, then let her. “Alright.”
Once Louis left, Freya thought for a moment, then cleaned up the house, wrote for a while, and headed out to buy groceries.
