But before Baylon could even nod in understanding, Louis dropped something that caught them both off guard.
“It’s not as complicated as you think. She’s changed after everything that happened. She’s doing pretty well now. The reason she’s living here is that she has nowhere else to go. These days, she’s cooking, earning her own money, going back to how life was before college.”
“Wait–then why hasn’t she divorced you?” Baylon immediately honed in on the key point. “Divorcing you and starting fresh -those two things don’t conflict. Why does she have to stick around you?” L
Louis tapped on the table. Baylon instantly toned down his agitated tone. Louis said slowly, “There are other reasons behind it. You don’t need to know. Just treat her with a little more respect going forward. She’s not as bad as you think.”
Baylon looked like he still wanted to ask more, but Waylon cut him off. With a knowing smile in his voice, he said, “Louis has his own plans–we don’t need to worry. Since Ms. Freya’s not who we thought she was, we’ll just be more polite to her from
now on.”
Then Waylon shook his head at Baylon, clearly exasperated. “Baylon, not to scold you or anything, but I know you and Louis are close. Still, could you stop getting so worked up whenever it’s about him? Don’t keep copying Kendrick all the time–mess around too long and you’ll end up just as brain–dead.”
Baylon practically bristled. “How am I anything like that dumbass? He and I are nothing alike!”
“You’re getting there.” Waylon shrugged. “We told Kendrick not to run over to the banquet looking for Louis, but he couldn’t help himself and nearly caused a scene. The two of you are basically two sides of the same coin.”
“I was just out of the loop, okay? I just got back–I don’t know what’s going on! And you’re always leaving things half–said! If I wasn’t so patient, I would’ve died from the stress already.” Baylon glared at Waylon, who just chuckled in response.
“Anyway, enough of that. Baylon, are you planning to join Quez Corp now that you’re back?” Louis looked at the two bickering men with a faint smile.
Baylon immediately deflated like a popped balloon. “I don’t want to, but my dad insists. You guys know I’ve never been into the auto industry. It’s driving me nuts.”
“Sure, you’re not interested. But you’ve got a natural talent for it,” Waylon said, not bothering to offer any sympathy. He picked up his tea and took a sip, sounding just the slightest bit smug. “Back in high school, you could already help your dad spot flaws in new car designs. You think he’d ever let you off the hook? That man probably grins in his sleep just thinking he has a son born for the family business.”
“Spare me,” Baylon muttered, clearly irritated. “If I’d known he was this scheming, I never would’ve fallen for it. My brief, peaceful days are slipping away. My poor little food business is about to be snatched away by that old fox. And you know what pisses me off the most? That guy never even acted like he cared about food. Turns out he was hiding his foodie side for years -freakin‘ terrifying.”
“Being pushed forward by your elders isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Your dad’s gone to great lengths for you. Try to appreciate it,” Louis said as he poured another cup of tea and slid it over to Baylon.
Baylon stood up and downed it in one go, which prompted another wave of laughter from Waylon. But Baylon stood his ground. “Not all of us are born with Louis’s taste for classical refinement. Tea tastes the same to me no matter what kind it is. One big gulp gets it over with. Isn’t that better?”
