Sure, it felt like a perfect little family moment–but she wasn’t actually his mom. As soon as that thought hit, all the warm and fuzzy feelings evaporated. Happiness was nice and all, but this kind of happiness felt like a house built in the clouds: pretty, but with no real foundation. Totally unreliable.
All Freya could do was hope that one day, she’d meet someone she truly loved, have a boy or a girl of her own, and bring them to the amusement park. Yeah, she’d sit in the middle too.
The pirate ship started swinging–wider and higher. People around them had already started squealing with excitement. Freya, though, let out a sigh of relief. It wasn’t nearly as terrifying as she’d imagined. A little intense, sure, but not to the point of nausea. She wasn’t going to throw up.
See? Just like she thought. She was no heroine–she didn’t get to be fragile and delicate. Her body wasn’t built for that kind of drama.
After a few minutes, the ship gradually slowed. Freya felt Louis loosen his grip on her hand, and when the ride came to a complete stop, both of them let go. Aiden turned to her, full of praise.
“Freya, you were super brave! You didn’t cry or throw up–you were way tougher than I expected!”
Freya had only been a little nervous at the beginning, not actually scared, but she couldn’t say that. So she smiled and said, “Of course. I’m a grown–up, remember? But you did way better than I expected too–you were awesome.”
“Lots of grown–ups are scaredy–cats though. Like that one,” Aiden said, pointing toward a woman by the trash can who was clutching a plastic bag and retching dramatically. “See? She’s really sick.”
Freya followed his finger. The woman was surprisingly pretty–even while throwing up, she somehow kept her poise. There was an effortless grace about her, untouched by the awkwardness of the moment. A staff member hurried over to check on her. The woman barely tilted her head in acknowledgment.
Something about her looked oddly familiar to Freya, but no matter how she tried to place it, she just couldn’t remember where she’d seen her before.
“Don’t point at people, and don’t talk about people you don’t know,” Louis said calmly, placing Aiden’s hand down with a firm but gentle motion. There was a faint tone of correction in his voice. Aiden immediately retracted his hand and nodded obediently.
“Let’s not worry about anyone else. We’ve been here for over two hours already–are you hungry or thirsty?” Freya unzipped Aiden’s backpack and handed it to him so he could pick what he wanted. Then she took off the pack she’d been wearing and pulled out a bottle of kids‘ milk, handing it to him.
Aiden grabbed a pack of cookies, took the milk from her, and said sweetly, “Thanks, Freya. You and Uncle should eat something too.”
Eat snacks… in front of Louis? And offer him snacks? That felt a little bold. Freya hesitated, unsure what to do. But before she could decide, Louis had already taken the two backpacks from her hand.
“What do you want to eat?” he asked.
He… didn’t say anything negative?
Freya blinked in surprise. Maybe it was because they were out having fun. Whatever the reason, she wasn’t about to let this rare opportunity slip by. She quickly pulled out some cookies and chips, along with a bottle of soda. Yup. Junk food. She’d been craving it, okay?
Louis glanced at the items in her hands but said nothing. When Aiden looked like he was about to ask for a sip of her soda, one warning glance from Louis shut that down real fast.
Freya figured going out really did make everything feel better. It was strange, though. She could eat snacks at home anytime she wanted. But somehow, sneaking junk food at home never felt nearly as satisfying as eating it right in front of Louis. For reasons she couldn’t quite explain, it just hit different.
