As soon as they entered what looked like the hospital lobby, a figure with bleeding eyes and a blank stare stood behind the reception desk, stiffly watching them. When he heard their footsteps, he even gave them a creepy smile. Freya jumped, startled, but managed to keep it together–for now. Her hand instinctively clenched, only to feel someone gently squeeze back in reassurance.
Realizing it was Louis, Freya calmed down slightly. It’s all fake, she reminded herself. And Louis is right here. There’s nothing to be afraid of. But just as she tried to relax, she heard a thudding sound from the hallway ahead. It didn’t sound like normal footsteps–more like… bouncing?
Wait. Bouncing?
Freya’s brain latched onto one word–zombie.
As the thumping noises got closer, her anxiety climbed. She looked left and right, considering whether they should take the quieter route instead. But Louis and Aiden stood completely still, clearly not planning to move.
“Maybe….
we should go the other way?” she whispered. “I think it’s a zombie. Like the ones in movies and TV. You know, the hopping kind?”
“Freya, you’re being silly,” Aiden replied in a matter–of–fact tone. “At least over here we know something’s coming–we’re mentally prepared. But over there, it’s quiet. What if something suddenly jumps out? That’d be way scarier.”
Freya’s face flushed. She hadn’t thought of it that way. And, well… he had a point. Better to face what you can see than fear what you can’t.
As they spoke, the sound finally reached them. Sure enough, out came a zombie doctor in a white coat, arms stretched stiffly in front of him. He didn’t try to scare them directly, just approached with a lifeless tone and asked, “Who’s sick?”
Aiden, cute as ever, replied, “None of us are sick, Doctor Uncle. You should go back and rest.”
The zombie doctor seemed ready to play his part, but the second he heard Aiden’s gentle follow–up, he paused–then turned around and hopped away without saying another word.
“That’s it?” Freya blinked, baffled. “He just… left?” She had been bracing herself for some major scare, and that was it? Watching the receptionist’s equally confused expression, she figured the doctor had gone easy on them on purpose.
“He probably left because I’m too cute,” Aiden said smugly, like a little gremlin.
“So, where do we go now?” Freya asked.
Louis pointed at a door behind the reception desk. “That way.”
“But it’s closed,” Freya said hesitantly. “It doesn’t look like it’s meant for guests.”
Louis turned to the receptionist. “That door isn’t open?”
The receptionist’s stiff face nearly cracked, but he held position and replied, “I’m sorry, sir. That leads to the inpatient ward- it’s not part of the public tour.”
Louis gave a small smirk. Freya could guess now–that was probably the shortcut to the exit. But they weren’t done yet, and Aiden clearly didn’t want to miss out on the rest of the experience.
“Let’s take the other way,” Louis said.
Aiden pointed toward where the zombie doctor had disappeared. “Let’s follow him! Maybe we’ll find something interesting
back there.”
