Chapter 87 Too Much Talk

“Hey!” the elderly woman snapped. “You’re a grown woman, dressed all nice–how can you speak so nastily?” She was clearly angry now. “We were all just trying to help. Can’t take it? Fine, then go. Don’t stand here hogging public space and ruining everyone’s mood!”
“Oh yeah? Is this your private property now? You tell me to leave and I have to go?” the woman sneered. “Let me tell you, I’m not leaving. Since you’re all so eager to meddle, let’s have a good chat. I want to see exactly what kind of grannies these nosy busybodies are. I’ll have someone record this and post it online–see if you don’t go viral!”
The chubby kid looked mortified. He tugged on his mom’s sleeve and muttered, “Mom… maybe we should go. Everyone’s staring and saying things about us. It’s really embarrassing. Maybe we did do something wrong?”
“Go? Go where?” she snapped, turning on him. “Why should we leave? This place doesn’t have your name on it! And you–are you feeling sorry for that woman just ‘cause she’s prettier than me? Don’t you know I’m your mother?! Did you not see what she said to me?! Your dad’s too busy ogling other people, and now you’re turning on me too?! You can’t even get decent grades–now you’re useless in a fight too! Why did I even give birth to you?!”
Freya couldn’t take it anymore. Seriously–there was no need to take things out on a child. If they didn’t look somewhat alike, she’d have doubted they were even biologically related. Who treats their kid like that in public?
Before Freya could step in, a nearby older woman had already grabbed the angry mother’s arm and launched into a new round of scolding.
Aiden shook his head repeatedly. “Forget it. I’m not going to argue with that kid anymore. Having a mom like that is punishment enough. If I keep going after him, I’ll look petty. With all that embarrassment today, he’s already miserable–I don’t need to add to it.”
Louis released the arm he’d been resting on Freya’s shoulder and naturally reached for Aiden’s hand. He gestured for Aiden to take Freya’s hand too, and said calmly, “Let’s go.”
Freya instantly felt like she’d stooped to someone else’s level by arguing for so long. “Right. Yeah, let’s go,” she said quickly, nodding.
Most of the bystanders had already turned their attention to the raging woman, and even those who were still admiring the trio’s looks respectfully moved aside to let them through. As they slowly walked away, the sounds of the argument still echoed behind them.
Just before they were out of earshot, Freya heard the man finally snapping at his wife.
“Have you lost your mind?! Isn’t this enough of a scene for you? I said one thing and you blew it into a whole mess! Next time, go out by yourself and leave me out of it! I must’ve done something awful in a past life to end up married to you! What a
curse!”
In the car, Freya stared blankly out the window, her mind replaying the chaos from earlier. She felt uneasy. She rarely got into arguments with people–let alone public shouting matches with someone acting like a lunatic. Personally, she didn’t care much, but she hated that Louis had been caught up in the whole mess. The thought of him being dragged into that spectacle made her feel awkward and a little guilty.
“Did I… talk too much back there?” she asked quietly, not even turning to face Louis, just staring ahead.
