The woman next to that man elbowed him hard in the ribs. Was that any way to talk? Louis hadn’t even walked far enough away–what, did he think Louis was deaf and couldn’t hear a word of it? They had no beef with him. Whether he went bankrupt or not, what did that have to do with them? Was it really worth offending someone over?
The hit jolted him back to reality, and his face turned pale. Sure enough, he saw Louis hesitate for a second—but he didn’t turn around. He just kept walking ahead with Freya.
Only then did the man breathe a sigh of relief.
“Whew… good thing you reacted fast, babe. I nearly blurted out that last part. If I had, even if Mr. Louis is broke now, one of his brothers could still easily crush me.”
“This Mr. Louis… is he the one you told me about? The head of the Graham family–the one who went bankrupt and hasn’t made a move since?” the woman whispered close to his ear, still hanging on his arm.
“Yeah, that’s him. I’ve never understood how someone like Mr. Louis could possibly lose. He took over the Graham family at twenty, not only stabilized the business but doubled it. Back then, he was the kind of guy our elders would compare us to -‘Why can’t you be more like Louis Graham?‘ He crushed everyone in our generation. Some idiots tried to mess with him and got cleaned up real bad. Once his brothers started rising one by one, no one dared make trouble anymore.”
The man sighed.
“Mr. Louis always seemed cold and ruthless, but honestly, he’s a pretty decent guy. He knows how to draw lines and holds himself with class. My dad used to say, “That one was raised by Edward himself–aside from that weirdo from the Collins family, no one can match him.‘ And really, I know I’ll never be on his level. Asher’s his friend, so that’s another story entirely.”
The woman nodded. “I get it now–he was the real deal. But like they say, life’s unpredictable. Who would’ve thought someone like that would one day lose out to a nobody like Mr. Simon?”
“I don’t think it’s that simple,” the man muttered. “I’m not smart enough to fully get what’s going on between those two gods duking it out, but look–Mr. Louis doesn’t have any debt, and most of the Graham family transferred smoothly to the new boss. That means he could have fought back, but he chose to step aside. That’s what feels strange.”
He pursed his lips and shook his head.
“Ah, forget it. I can’t figure out what’s in their heads. Even my dad’s baffled, so I’ve got no chance. Mr. Simon’s no joke either… thankfully, our business has nothing to do with theirs, so I don’t need to worry about getting caught up in it.”
“Well, just watch what you say next time,” the woman said, patting his shoulder. “I’m not expecting you to become a billionaire or anything. I’m happy with a simple life.”
The two of them changed the subject and strolled away, laughing and chatting as they went.
Meanwhile, Freya had no idea what they’d been talking about. She glanced over at Louis curiously. “Who was that guy just now?”
“Just the youngest son of the Wynn family,” Louis replied. “Bit of a blockhead. Not important. We’ve only met a few times- no real connection. You don’t need to worry about him.”
In Louis’s eyes, small–fry heirs like that didn’t even register. Their existence was practically invisible. Not worth paying attention to. Now if it had been that guy’s older brother, maybe he’d exchange a few words.
