Facing Natalie’s arrogant stare, Anathea felt as if her legs were bolted to the floor. Her nails dug into her palms so hard they drew blood.
People outside the room started craning their necks to watch, clearly expecting drama.
“What’s wrong? You don’t want to do it?” Natalie asked with an air of total case, giving a lazy shrug. “That’s fine. I don’t like forcing people, anyway. But if you won’t kneel, then forget about the medicine.”
Natalie shut the case and slid it back to the doctor. “I want the injection now.”
“Understood. I’ll get the nurse to prepare it right away.” The doctor nodded and was just about to leave with the case.
As he reached the door, Anathea shouted in panic, “Wait!”
But the doctor didn’t stop. He acted as if he didn’t hear her. Seeing that he was about to walk off with the medicine, Anathea couldn’t take it anymore. “I’ll do it! I’ll kneel!”
“Hold on,” Natalie said casually, and the doctor immediately paused mid–step.
Natalie had total control, and she loved every second of it. A smirk tugged at the corner of her lips as she looked at Anathea. “Go ahead, then, Ms. Jacobson. Kneel.”
Anathea took a deep breath. Her hands were so numb from the pain that she couldn’t feel them anymore, and her chest ached as if she could physically feel Fiona’s condition deteriorating on the operating table.
She knew Natalie was doing this just to humiliate her, but she had no other choice. Her pride didn’t matter, not when Fiona’s life was hanging by a thread.
So, she dropped to her knees.
Right there, in front of everyone, she knelt before Natalie and said sincerely, “Natalie, I’m begging you. Please give me the medicine.”
Some of the people watching looked visibly uncomfortable now. There was a hint of sympathy in their eyes, but that was all. In a hospital like this, there were too many tragedies every day for anyone to get too emotional.
The doctor holding the case hesitated. After all, Natalie had said she’d give the medicine if Anathea begged her.
Natalie looked down at Anathea, her smile widening. With the flower stem in her hand, she tilted Anathea’s chin up so their eyes met.
“I have to say, I’m surprised. I wasn’t expecting you to really do it. I thought you were supposed to be too proud for something
like this.”
Anathea bit her lip, hard.
Proud? Compared to a medicine that could save Fiona’s life, pride was worthless.
“You said you’d give me the medicine, We had a deal.” Anathea’s voice trembled in urgency and desperation. She was terrified Natalie would go back on her word at the last second.
But the truth was, Natalie had never intended to keep that promise,
“When did we have a deal?” Natalie asked with a laugh.
Anathea’s heart dropped.
“I never actually agreed to anything. I never said I’d give you the medicine if you begged. I just wanted to see you act like you meant it.”
“You played me?” Anathea’s voice came out cracked, raw with disbelief and fury.

Anathea bit down so hard on her lip she tasted blood. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of the vase on the table, and her expression wavered.
At that moment, a nurse from the operating room came running over.
“Ms. Jacobson! Bad news! Mrs. Jacobson just lost consciousness! If we don’t operate soon, she might not make it!”
Anathea’s pupils shrank, and she immediately grabbed the armrest of Natalie’s wheelchair. “Natalie, I’m begging you! Please,
I’ll pay any price you want. Whatever it costs, I’ll find a way! Just give me the medicine!”
But Natalie didn’t care, not even a little. She flung Anathea off without a second thought. “Get off me!”
