Gregory had never experienced a mother’s love, so he had no idea how devastating it could be for a mother to lose her child.
At the time, he’d seen the look of despair on Anathea’s face. She’d boked so bleak that it had struck something deep inside him.
For a moment, he’d wavered. He’d gone to find Eleanor.
The day Xander was returned to Anathea, Gregory had seen a smile on her pale face that he hadn’t seen in a long time. That smile had carried the joy of getting something precious back, mixed with the fear of losing it again. It was complicated.
He’d stood at a distance and watched her for a long time.
Now, he was seeing that same expression on her face again.
Only this time, his mind had changed. He’d taken a step forward from a cold, indifferent observer to something more.
“I’ll keep it a secret, and I won’t let them take the baby away after they’re born,” Gregory said slowly, his tone serious.
Anathea froze. It was the first time Gregory had ever made her a promise.
“But don’t think about leaving on your own again. If I can arrange for Adam to be treated, I can make sure he dies in prison just as easily,” Gregory warned.
Anathea clenched her fists, knowing he would actually do it.
Nodding, she uttered, “Alright.”
Gregory was quite satisfied with her giving in. He reached out and touched her collarbone with his fingertips, right where he’d bitten her the night before.
He’d bitten hard enough to break the skin. Now, it had scabbed over faintly.
“Does it still hurt?” he asked.
Anathea shook her head but moved back slightly. She still couldn’t get used to his touch.
Gregory’s eyes narrowed slightly. He pulled his hand back and leaned into the seat, saying casually, “You gave me three conditions, and I agreed to all of them. It’s my turn now.”
“What are they?”
“I haven’t decided yet. I’ll let you know when I figure it out,” he replied, glancing at her.
Anathea didn’t say anything, but her eyes were full of caution as she looked at him.
“Relax, I won’t ask for more than I should. You get three, and I get three. It’s a fair trade.”
Upon hearing that, Anathea relaxed a little.
“Besides that…” Gregory’s gaze dropped to her bare ring finger. He remembered how she’d yelled at him before, saying she’d thrown the ring away. His brows furrowed.
She’d thrown the ring away without a second thought.
“Have Martin take you to a jewelry store later. Buy a ring and wear t.”
“No need. I-”
“A ring is a symbol that you’re married. Don’t even think about anything else, or I’ll get rough, Mrs. Sinclair,” Gregory interrupted coldly.
Anathea didn’t argue back. She just responded, “Understood, Mr. Sinclair.”

Gregory looked at her. She had her eyes lowered, and though she gave in, her tone was utterly devoid of emotion when she said his name.
A coldness crept into Gregory’s expression when he realized their marriage wasn’t being held together by Anathea’s feelings for
him anymore.
It was just a transaction now.
But he didn’t care too much. Anathea was already back by his sides for her heart, that was only a matter of time.
Gregory stared at her, not even realizing that his eyes were filled with longing for her.
Just then, his phone screen lit up. A message had come in.
Gregory looked away and opened it.
Anathea kept her gaze forward, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw who the message was from.
Her fingers curled slightly. She’d nearly forgotten that there was still an unbridgeable gap between her and Gregory–Natalie.
