Anathea thanked Martin for taking her side, even though she knew it was almost impossible for Gregory to instruct Martin to do as such.
After all, Gregory had given Natalie the black card. It was obvious he cared more about Natalie.
“You’re welcome,” Martin replied with a smile.
“Five years ago, my brother got injured at a construction site. The treatment required a large sum of money, and you used the excuse of a New Year’s bonus to give me the money.”
So, that was it. Anathea’s thoughts stirred. Back then, it had just been a small gesture. She’d long forgotten about it.
Now that Martin mentioned it, the memory came back to her.
“How’s your brother doing now?”
“He’s running a diner now. Life’s been pretty decent.”
If not for the money Anathea had given back then, his brother probably would’ve missed the golden hour for treatment and ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
By giving the money in the form of a bonus, Anathea had not only solved his family’s crisis but also preserved his dignity.
That was why Martin had always felt deeply grateful toward Anathea. He sincerely hoped that she and Gregory could be happy together.
It was just a pity that Gregory didn’t cherish someone as good as Anathea.
Martin sighed inwardly but quickly composed himself. Affairs of the wealthy were not for him to comment on. All he could do was stay in his lane.
“Please get in the car, Mrs. Sinclair.”

Anathea nodded. Before getting in, she hesitated for a moment, then pulled out the black card and handed it to Martin. “Could you return this to Gregory?”
After all, she had no right to keep Gregory’s card.
However, instead of taking it, Martin said respectfully, “You should be the one to return it to him, Mrs. Sinclair.”
Anathea pressed her lips together. Knowing she had put Martin in a tough spot, she silently withdrew the card.
The car cruised smoothly along the city roads.
Anathea leaned against the seat, gazing out the window in a daze. She was twisting her fingers idly.
The thought that Gregory might come after her for what had happened today and possibly even take it out on Martin left her with a gnawing unease. The nerves made it impossible for her to appreciate the passing scenery.
With that unsettled feeling, she rode back to Sinclair Villa.
As soon as Anathea got out of the car, Jenny came running out to greet her. “Mrs. Sinclair! You’re finally back!”
Jenny threw her arms around Anathea without hesitation, tears welling in her eyes. “I missed you so much!”
Anathea was caught off guard for a moment, then hugged Jenny back. To be honest, she was a little touched–Jenny was one of the few people in the entire Sinclair Villa who’d ever treated her with genuine kindness.
Sniffling, Jenny uttered, “You have no idea, Mrs. Sinclair. While you were gone, I had no energy for anything. Cyrus was so mean. He kept threatening to dock my pay over the tiniest things, and there was no one to speak up for me.”

Hearing Jenny’s complaints, Anathea didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
The more Jenny thought about how she’d been overworked like a mule lately, the more miserable she felt, and the harder she cried.
“I’m back now, aren’t I? Stop crying.” Anathea comforted Jenny, brushing her tear–damp hair aside.
“If you keep it up, your face will look like a raccoon in a minute.”
Jenny sniffled and nodded, wiping her tears. “I just missed you too much, Mrs. Sinclair. Mr. Xander missed you as well. He got sick a while back, and he kept calling your name, crying for you every day. He’s gotten so skinny.”
Anathea paused at that.
She’d only seen Xander once yesterday at the competition. He’d clung to her and refused to let go, crying pitifully the whole time.
Still, she hadn’t softened because Xander had also hurt her deeply
Just then, Cyrus rushed out, sounding alarmed. “Something’s wrong. Mr. Xander has a high fever again, and now he’s breaking out in rashes all over!”
