She bid a soft farewell to Theo. “Goodbye, then.”
Theo said nothing and merely stared at Anathea. Even though she willingly gotten into Gregory’s car, Theo didn’t think she was happy.
But before he could get another look at Anathea, Gregory rolled up the window and cut off his view. The Maybach sped off. Neither Gregory nor Anathea said anything inside the car. Anathea thought he might question her about Theo, but he didn’t. Gregory was the first to break the silence. “For someone still injured, you’re certainly eager to return to work.” “I’m free to earn a living,” Anathea pointed out flatly.
“I’m already giving you ten million dollars every month. Why do you still have to be so hands–on with the job?” Gregory frowned, muttering, “And for such little pay too…”
“Not everyone is as rich as you, Mr. Sinclair. We can’t all just casually blow 50 million dollars on a gift for someone,” Artathea countered icily.
Gregory froze when he heard this, and tension filled the car again. Anathea closed her eyes, not wanting to talk to him.
A moment later, Gregory explained slowly, “I didn’t blow any money on gifts for anyone. I wanted to get you something at the auction the last time, and Natalie went with my mom. My mom was the one who got her the tiara.”
As if Gregory would ever be drawn toward a tiara so ugly and tacky! Unfortunately, when the media reported on it, they’d used his name for publicity.
He knew Eleanor had wanted it that way; she’d always been adept at manipulating narratives, after all, including the one about the fireworks show on Valentine’s Day.
It had been a group photo, yet Eleanor had cropped out the rest of the group so that Natalie and Gregory looked like they were the only ones in the shot.
Gregory hadn’t explained himself at the time because he thought he didn’t care enough about Anathea to reassure her. And now, his poor decision had come back to bite him in the rear.
“I’m sorry, Annie. I promise I won’t let something like that happen again,” he said tentatively, sounding like he was appeasing Anathea.
Martin, who was driving, looked surprised. He’d been working for Gregory for many years, and he more or less understood how the latter operated.
In the world of someone as cold and aloof as Gregory, everything came down to two choices–to do or not to do.
Explanations were personal to him, not that he’d ever bother with them. To be misunderstood was an expected outcome for him as well. He wouldn’t even so much as smirk if he heard any rumors about him.
In other words, Gregory hardly ever explained himself, much less apologized. It was why Martin was so shocked.
Naturally, Martin’s jaw would drop if he found out this wasn’t the first time Gregory had pestered Anathea and begged her for forgiveness.
Anathea’s expression remained stoic. She didn’t even open her eyes.
The next second, she felt a warm weight in her hands. She slowly opened her eyes and glanced at her palm to find a necklace nestled in it. The large gem on the necklace, in particular, was radiant under the sunlight.
