The cream cake on the table had already started to melt, and the carefully prepared dishes had gone cold.
Three hours earlier, Gregory had called and said he had urgent business. He asked her to wait for him because he would be back
in an hour.
He’d never called to check in before. This was the first time.
Anathea had believed him, so she waited. She’d even made another dish–white wine mussels, Gregory’s favorite.
However, another hour had passed, then another, and another, and he still hadn’t come back.
“Mom, why is Dad not here yet?” Xander asked, yawning.
Anathea didn’t answer.
It was obvious–he’d broken his promise.
“Can we call Dad and ask where he is?” Xander blinked and looked up at her.
Anathea hesitated, but Xander had already picked up her phone and handed it to her.
If it were a day earlier, Anathea definitely wouldn’t have called. After all, she didn’t care whether Gregory came home or not. But now, under Xander’s expectant gaze, she took the phone.
The call rang twice before it was picked up.
“Greg-”
Before she could finish, a sultry, flirtatious voice sounded on the other end. “Hello?”
The faint, rowdy noise in the background told Anathea exactly where Gregory was at this hour.
He was at Drunk Elysium, which was in the most upscale red–light district in Castenea. In plain terms, it was a top–tier nightclub.
Had he asked her to wait for him just so he could satisfy himself at the nightclub before coming home to get a midnight snack from her?
Listening to the noisy sounds on the other end, Anathea raised a hand to rub her temples and said calmly, “I’m looking for Gregory. Could you pass the phone to him?”

Anathea didn’t want to waste her time on a drunk woman, but her good manners still made her respond. “I’m his wife.”
Gregory had publicly introduced her as his wife at the Presgraves‘ party, in front of all the media.
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before the woman laughed mockingly. “Oh, I thought it was someone important. Turns out it’s you, Ms. Jacobson.”
It didn’t matter that Gregory had made the announcement. Everyone knew the rumors about him and another woman. As for his supposed wife, they knew it was only in name–she had no power or background.
Anathea’s title as “Mrs. Sinclair” had long been hollowed out, making her the perfect target for the women in the club to bully. “If you want to see him, why don’t you come here? It’s late; have you eaten? Bet the food’s cold by now, huh?” Anathea glanced at the cold dishes on the table and was just about to hang up when Xander tugged on her sleeve.
“Mom, what did Dad say? Is he coming back? I’m a bit hungry…” he whispered.
Anathea let out a breath. “Could you please give the phone to Gregory? I need to talk to him. It won’t take long.”
