The night air was cool, and the sky was clear under the pale silver moonlight. The Maybach slowly pulled into Sinclair Villa,
It was then that Anathea finally stirred from sleep. Her mind was all hazy when she heard Gregory’s gentle voice. “You’re awake?”
Anathea paused, realizing she was curled up in Gregory’s arms. She quickly pulled away and asked flatly, “Why didn’t you wake me sooner?”
“Because I wanted to hold you a little longer,” Gregory replied without hesitation and reached out for her hand.
Her fingers were cold. His were large and warm, easily enveloping hers. “Why are your hands so cold? Didn’t you wear enough layers?”
Anathea didn’t answer. She wasn’t used to him acting this way and instinctively tried to pull her hand back.
But Gregory didn’t let go. In fact, the more she struggled, the tighter he held on.
She frowned and shot him a glare. “Let go.”
“No.” Gregory shook his head.
They sat there, caught in a quiet tug–of–war.
Up front, Dexter had originally planned to park the car in the driveway. But when he glanced in the rearview mirror, he turned the wheel suddenly. The motion sent Anathea sliding toward Gregory with the momentum.
Gregory was quick. He opened his arms and caught her, wrapping an arm around her waist so her entire body landed against his. Surrounded by the crisp scent of cedarwood, Anathea pressed her lips together.
The car finally rolled to a smooth stop in the garage. Dexter stepped out and opened the door for them while offering an excuse “It looks like it might rain soon, so I parked inside.”
Anathea was rendered speechless.
The moon was hanging so brightly overhead. There was no way it was going to rain.
Gregory’s lips tugged into a subtle smile. “You get a 20% raise.”
“Thank you, Mr. Sinclair.” Dexter nodded respectfully and quickly walked away, leaving the two of them alone.
Silence settled inside the car once more.
Anathea gave up trying to break free, but she could asking, “Why did you do that earlier?”
“Because I wanted to hold you,” Gregory blurted out.
Caught off guard by his answer, Anathea blushed. “I wasn’t talking about that!”
She was talking about his decision to help Hale Eatery.
He claimed it was an advance payment for her future meals. But at her pace, she couldn’t burn through two million dollars even if she ate there every day until the end of her life.
“Oh.” Gregory nodded, then said matter–of–factly, “It was a classic damsel–in–distress moment, so I figured I’d play the hero. Besides, my beautiful Annie is worth far more than two million dollars.”
Anathea was momentarily stunned into silence.
She’d known him for so many years and been married to him for long enough. She thought she understood him. But now, he was becoming harder and harder to read.

So, she decided not to try. She pushed him away and got out of the car. “It’s late. I’m heading in.”
Gregory didn’t move immediately. He just sat there, watching her walk away.
She was definitely still mad at him. Why else would she be walking so fast, without even the slightest intention of waiting for
him?
But just as she reached a certain point, she suddenly stopped and looked like she might turn around.
Gregory’s breath slowed. He thought she might turn around and urge him to catch up. Her tone would likely be awkward but undoubtedly cute.
Expecting that, he was already about to get out of the car.
However, the next moment, Anathea simply turned to the side and walked over to the flowerbed by the door.
She gazed at the flowers she’d carefully nurtured from seeds to bloom. Recently, the storms had been harsh, and she hadn’t paid enough attention. The flowers had been blown down, their petals drooping in a pitiful way.
Anathea crouched down and gently picked up a snapped stem. Her expression was full of quiet sorrow.
She showed no expression toward him, yet her face softened with such tenderness for the flowers. Gregory couldn’t help but laugh from sheer frustration.
He flung the car door open and strode toward her.
