Anathea didn’t say a word, but the confusion on her face said enough.
Everyone knew Shirley and Dominic’s wedding was just around the corner, and they were a perfect match.
Judging by Shirley’s attitude toward Dominic, it didn’t seem like she disliked him at all.
Noticing Anathea’s probing gaze, Shirley slowly set the cut ribbon piece onto the tray and smiled faintly.
“A smart and sensible wife doesn’t get hung up on her husband being a little too friendly with other women. As Mrs. Sinclair, I’m sure you understand that well.”
Shirley’s words echoed the kind of mindset deeply rooted in high society.
The marriage alliance between the Lancaster and Watson families had tied her and Dominic’s fates together. So, his success was hers, and his failure was hers as well. That was why she’d chosen to personally step in and clean up the mess for him.
To Anathea, Shirley came across as the picture of a graceful, understanding socialite wife. She was the kind of woman others would admire and sympathize with.
But she couldn’t help remembering that she’d seen Shirley quietly speaking with a man earlier.
She suspected that Shirley wasn’t as simple as she appeared on the surface, though she couldn’t put her finger on it.
“A smart wife?” Gregory let out a scoff and exposed Shirley. “If you were really that smart, you wouldn’t have conspired with the event organizer to set Hannah up.
“But in the end, your little scheme backfired. Now you’re trying to play the reasonable, understanding woman just to cover for yourself because you’re scared Dominic might come after you. Am I right?”
Shirley’s expression froze. She hadn’t expected Gregory to see right through her act.
It was true. After learning about Dominic’s relationship with Hannah, she’d had no intention of letting Hannah have it easy. She’d paid off Ollie, planning to humiliate Hannah in front of the cameras. But she’d clearly underestimated just how much Dominic cared about Hannah.
“So what?” After being exposed, Shirley gave up pretending, her voice revealing a hint of resentment.
“You all saw it. He walked right up to her in front of all those cameras, completely ignoring how it would affect our families‘ alliance! And here I am, forced to play the gracious wife, cleaning up his mess! I’m the most in it and pitiful one here!”
Shirley then turned to Anathea. “Don’t tell me you’ve never felt this way, Mrs. Sinclair.”
Anathea’s eyes flickered with a complicated emotion.
Shirley caught it and pushed further. “Don’t forget, your husband’s had his fair share of rumors too. Especially with Ms. Whitman-”
“That’s enough!” Gregory cut her off coldly. “My business isn’t yours to comment on.

“Oh? Did I hit a nerve?” Shirley scoffed.
Then she directed her words at Anathea again, trying to sow discord. “Men are all the same. Why should we turn a blind eye and protect their reputation when they can’t even stay faithful?”
Frowning, Gregory glanced at Anathea. Somehow, he suddenly felt nervous. He was afraid she might believe Shirley’s words and grow distant from him.
It had taken him so long to slowly break down her walls and ease her resistance toward him.
“If you truly can’t tolerate it, then cancel the wedding before it’s too late, rather than hurting others and pretending to be the

Shirley froze, caught off guard by Anathea’s answer. Then she let out a chuckle. “Cancel the wedding? No way. This isn’t some childish game. It’s a strategic alliance.”
And no, she wasn’t about to back out. If she married into the Lancaster family, it would take the Watsons to a whole new level in Syntherra. Giving that up now would make her a fool.
